Silly question I know, but how does one tie things down? I saw those recessed tie down hooks on the parts forum just now and those look so neat!

I remember my dad having wood running down the sides of his truck, using the stakes on the sides of the bed......is that how you'd tie things down?

Anyone have pics?

If you stay under 45 mph *most* things won't fly out

Stake pocket anchors. Many types available. For tall loads I drop in a set of notched 2x4's.

It's hard in any pickup bed to find a good low tie-down point w/o at lest drilling screw holes. The pocket type are the best, but require cutting the floor out. There are folding rings that screw down, but you could bolt through. Not sure what their capacity limit is. I always use a trailer for motorcycles. They need straps to the floor to compress the fork and a trailer is nice and low for loading

well I use chain links welded to the corners works great every time.

Well good. When I get the truck going again and "in service," I'll make up a set of boards running down the sides for tie down use.

That is a great way to go on a steel floor. On a Stepside you could take two links, plate bottom, and through-bolt

GM advertising actually stated an advantage of the wood floor was you could nail down cargo to keep it from shifting.

Good suggestions all! My truck has a steel bed made of a single 1/8" piece of steel, held to the frame with 4 plug welded bolts. As long as I can have clearance for a 4 foot piece of sheetrock or plywood, I'd be happy with some welded-in chain links like the fellow above suggested.

I have a toolbox across the forward end of my bed. It has 2 big handles close to the edges. I run a 3/8" hemp line bowlined on the handle on one side [let's say Drvrs] and toss the line over diagonally to the Psgr Rear, where I run it under the tailgate chains, then across the back, under the Drvr tailgate chains and toss back to the Psgr toolbox handle. If I need more stability in the middle I run the rope back about halfway and loop the line under an "S" hook [like for tightening snow chains] hooked under the rolled stepside rail and across to another "S" hook and tie it off.
Easy, cheap and Old School. If you don't have the big tool box, buy the gizmo stake pocket tiedowns [as illustrated in Post #4] for the forward positions.
Also Bunji cord hooks are perfect for setting under the rolled edges of the side rails.
I could never figure out Fleetsides. Go figure?
