Help with Installing Upper and Lower Trim

So -- my '72 Custom/10 SWB came equipped with upper and lower trim moldings options... but the prior owner removed it and filled all the holes when he had the truck repainted.

I am looking to put the moldings back on, here are my questions --

1) Has anyone had really good results using the clips with adhesive? (LMC sells these...)

2) If I decide to go with the original type clips and not the adhesive, can I install the molding properly without removing the fenders and bedsides???

I recently replaced all of the moldings on my son's 71 GMC. We used mostly parts from LMC and a few NOS pieces.

No, I don't like the adhesive clips because the molding doesn't fit as flush up against the body as they do when using spring type clips.

Yes, you can install the moldings without removing the fenders and bedsides.

1.) I haven't used LMC moulding clips but I just put upper and lower trim on my truck last year. I used the 71-72 style adhesive clips on the upper bed trim. I am going to go back and drill holes eventually because I don't like the gap this style clip makes on the trim.
This is just my personal preference though.
2.) Yes and no. You can properly drill all the holes for the trim retainers. But you wont be able to reach all the nuts on the rear in some spots. i.e. the lower trim on front of the doors (ask me how I know).
I was able to get it done but I spent literally an hour on 1 nut on the driver side. On the passenger side I just pulled the door.
It seems like there are some spots on the fenders that will be a problem too, I know you need access to the emblem bolts too.
Many of the OEM clips are just push in retainers.

I used the adhesive clips but pulled off the tape and used .03 thick black adhesive tape order from McMaster Carr. Sticks much better and closer to the panel.

ledzepp gave me some great advice - I used 3M double-sided trim adhesive instead of the stuff that came with the adhesive clips. Worked better. I believe it also allowed for a less pinched look because it bumped out a bit. Different from others' experience it sounds like.

I did the same on mine. I just don't like the gap when you look down the upper trim on the bed. I also didn't want to drill a crap load of holes in my brand new paint.

I wonder if it's possible to use just the tape -- no clips -- so it is more flush against the body panels??????????
