Re: Project Family Truckster: 2wd Conversion Turbo LSx Blazer Build

Not much new....balls deep in wiring. I could have had it up and running in a day or two, but I'm pretty anal about the planning and execution of the wiring. It will be super clean when done though. Also been splitting time with the blue truck project.

Thanks for the compliments.

Finally wrapping up a bunch of the wiring...or at least enough to power up the ECU and load a file into it.

Look Ma, no cables!!

It's working pretty awesome.

Put about 150 miles of shakedown on it this weekend.

Re: Project Family Truckster: 2wd Conversion Turbo LSx Blazer Build

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on an ECU and have been looking at the AEM Infinity, but now wondering if the Dominator might be more adaptable, how are you liking yours?

Re: Project Family Truckster: 2wd Conversion Turbo LSx Blazer Build

I haven't really looked at the AEM until now. I has some nice things that the holley doesn't (yet?) have, like flex fuel sensor integration, fuel pressure compensation, VVT control, built in traction control.

However, I think the price edge definitely goes to Holley, as well as the tons of custom programmable inputs/outputs. I didn't see anything regarding built in transmission control on the AEM either? I also have the Dominator running a dual nozzle progressive meth setup, which i didn't see listed for the AEM. You can also add the CAN tuning display to the holley, which is a nice (but expensive) unit.

I think either one will work great for you, but I really like the Dominator so far.

After talking to AEM what concerns me is that a lot of the inputs are pretty much log only and they have very limited CAN definitions to output it to CAN data. I was planning on running Speedhut CAN gauges for everything as well as having an onboard PC with a CAN aquisition card, and well basically monitor everything I have inputs for in real time. The AEM really only outputs CAN info for things they feel are important to running the engine and the rest is just stored data, nothing realtime.

The VVT on my engine is really there to do torque smoothing and for emissions, sorry don't care about that. I'm going with a PCS TCU and a 6 speed 4L80E and the Dominator won't do that anyway, traction control requires wheel sensors which I won't have, though I am doing my build with the idea that at some point it could be switched to LPG or CNG if I wanted to. I will have the capability to run 2 independent fuel rails if I wanted to.

Anyway the real issue is CAN output, for me.

Re: Project Family Truckster: 2wd Conversion Turbo LSx Blazer Build

Part of this winter's upgrades on the Clunker was a new/bigger wastegate. Had to fab a new screamer dump pipe for the gate, and wanted to try out my new backpurge setup, so I made it from stainless.

I also wanted to re-do the exhaust for two reasons: 1) to knock the noise down a bit, and 2) to lighten it up. The natural choice was to build a completely aluminum downpipe and exhaust.

The old downpipe:

The new:

Any concerns on the temps and heat cycles with the aluminum?

The first couple feet are 11 gauge, and it transitions to 16 gauge after that. I think it will be fine, but we'll have to see.

Looks good, stainless looks awesome. Something about the heat coloring on the ss after being tigged, that makes me funny. Hope the aluminum works might be on to something!

Very nice work as usual...enjoy reading your threads(also dads pickup build) very nice of you.

To get to my question....
EGR, i see that youre running a breather can. Are your hoses going directly into the valve covers, no baffles? Im trying to run the same system, but just cant get my head wrapped around how the system works and what is required.

Thank you for your time!

I'm hoping to bring it up to GB once or twice this summer. We'll go do burnouts.

Thanks. I'm a white-collar engineer by trade, and I'm self-taught so they're not pro-quality, but they're ok. I have a Miller Syncrowave 200.

It's actually not EGR that you're wondering about, it's PCV

I welded some baffles into the valvecovers under the fittings that I welded on the valvecovers. The baffles will help keep the liquid oil in the engine, and most of the vapor should separate out either in the lines (and drain back to the cover) or in the can. Just have to drain it ever so often.

Yep, your right, it is PCV. You wouldnt happen to have pics of the way you made your baffles, what they look like?

I wasn't able to find a pic of the baffling I added, but here is one showing the fittings I welded to the valve covers.
