I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

I've been driving the beater a lot lately and as time goes on, I'm getting dissatisfied with it.

It has a worn look to it, but frankly, I'm starting to realize it looks like a POS, not a beater. It a real good truck underneath, and drives splendidly, but I'm vain and I don't like people to think my stuff is junk.

I'm thinking about slicking the body work up and putting it in a nice coat of red oxide primer, and then putting my own shop logos on the doors. I'll weld up all the extra holes, probably shave some emblems, and stake pockets and stuff. I've already done rockers and cab corners and spotted them in with white primer. As a side benefit, having my own name and logo on the doors might help scare up some business, so I could make some side line money.

Here's basically what it looks like now...

What do ya'll think, slick and primer or leave it alone?

Don't be scared, fire away with opinions.

I'd paint it in flat red John Deer paint.

Better than the primer, more durable.

have you thought about painting it. The truck looks good to me as it is, but if you are not happy with it you should change it. If your not happy with how it is now I don't think you will be much happier with it in primer. Put some gloss on there.

i think the red oxide look would work // the only thing is to have a working truck i'd leave the stake pockets cause i tend to haul much big stuff

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

Hotrodhomi, I've run my stuff in suede paint for years and years and liked it. I don't necessarily need shiny to be happy. I just don't want it to look like a derelict.

Another reason to use primer right now, is that a 68 front clip is in my future. I just haven't found it yet. Once I do find one, I'll have to shoot it to match, or re-shoot the whole truck.

I've recently priced normal auto primer and it's higher than a giraffe's butt. Things sure have gotten expensive lately. So, I'm thinking about using some industrial implement stuff since it's much cheaper. They sell a full line of it at the trailer supply place where I go. Even as cheap as it is, since I keep it parked indoors and don't drive it when the weather is bad, I'd imagine it would last awhile.

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

If you plan on getting it to primer point, just take the extra mile and paint it the shinny color you want. If it is going to be a daily driver, just put a 5 foot paint job on it. That a way you won't be so mad when it gets a little scratch.
FYI 5' paint job is one where it looks good 5' away and up any closer than that you find little nit picky flaws. That is about all I am capable of. Mechanics yes, body work, no good.

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

Tx, I say go for it. While you know I like the patina look, it doesn't work as well on this one because it's multi-colored. I think the satin black look has been beat pretty hard, so I wouldn't go that way. I have been wanting to build a beater 73-80 truck for a while. If I do, it would be sprayed red oxide.

Worse case scenario is you have to go ahead and put a top coat on it if you don't like it....

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

To me, the only thing that is truely uncool is rust, and poorly done aftermarket modifications. Old paint, suede, even minor dents still keep in charachter with the truck.
I guess ripped up seats kinda stink too.
Just dont go getting a cheap-a**ed paint job for short term gratification.

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

Have you thought about trying to match the bed to the front end then throw on the Crager's you love so much. For me the thing that is not pulling it togeather is the stock Ralley's.

A. Ralley's + weathered = Broke down work truck. You do not even notice that it is lowered.

B. Cragers (Slots, turbines or other classic rims) + weathered + matching bed = Patina and Cool.

Just my opinion but i think that if you did the B style you would like it more. i think that is what made your step so popular. The wheels just completed the look.

If you don't mind the primer, I would leave it. It looks fine. It doesn't sound like you are the one that has a problem with the color. Buy your wife something nice, she'll forget about it.

Hmmmm, if I had that truck, I'd probably change the wheels to Keystones or Cragars, with some white letter tires. Then I'd paint it up with Allis Chalmers orange paint.

Re: I'd like everyone's opinions on my truck

I agree with Primer69 as well. It needs a set of wheels. Maybe someone can Photoshop it a couple different ways for you. I primered my 67 SWB because it was 7 different colors. I wanted it to look similar to yours but all of the rustfree metal I found for it was different colors. To me these trucks look the best in faded paint and old style wheels.

Theres a differnance between a WIP (work in progress) and a beater. Regardless of whats underneath. Work the body and paint one color, flat, primer or color. Honestly around here it wouldn't get a second look.

Two words: Classified ads. I bought a set of Keystone Klassics for 80 bucks. Front ones are OK shape, rear ones are mint. I got lugnuts and 2 front tires, with them, too.

Well I like your idea on the one color. I think the red primer will look good. I also think with that scheme the ralleys look the best, but I am a ralley, not a big chrome man. I do agree with cdowns about keeping the stake pockets. Most of the time I just haul my @$$ in mine, but I sure do find theose pockets handy when somethine goes in the bed.

Theres nothing wrong with a primer sealer. Satin black primer with your shop name painted on the side would look cool. Kind of a Rat Rod look. My opinion.

I like the idea of the red primer with the shop logo and the shaved stake pockets. I will be using my truck for work, and I will be shaving the stake pockets, as it looks good and if you try to use them as an anchor, you usually end up wrecking the paint. Would you paint the interior to match?
