advice for divorced transfer install

i'm in the progress of restoring my 1\2 ton 4x4 and i have a divorced transfer case so that i can run any tranny i want with it i have a 6'' suspension lift. what is the best place to mount the transfer so that i keep all the angles the best and what kind of crossmember should i use. how far from the tranny should it sit? Thanks

I'd use the stock x-member. I'd also probably bolt the t-case up to the tranny, jack it up and figure out where it's supposed to be. Then mark the holes and drill it.

Do you have the Rockwell t-case?

I have a divorced 205 tcase in my 1996 Monster .... The best thing to do is place the transfer case in the center of both driveshafts.... That way... if you break the rear... you could replace it with the front... also... it will put less stress on the front driveshaft.... you will have to make the small driveshaft from the tranny to the transfer case as well. I have a 205 t-case it doesnt bolt to the tranny it needs to be mounted and a short drive shaft connects the tranny and transfer. 71blksuper4x4, what kind of mounting bracket did you use to mount it?

Did you get it from a dodge? If you can, go back and grab the crossmember too. The t-case hung off of them and was bolted on with 4 bolts iirc.

I got mine like 1969 GMC .... I took the dodge stock crossmember and added some to it.. I believe mine had to be modified to fit my frame to fit under the new body we put under it.... you will have to see.

I bought mine from a guy that had it in a 1980's style chevy and he didn't have the crossmember any longer do you guys have a picture so that i could fab one up. i kinda have an idea of how it needs to be mounted but i cant picture how i want to build a crossmember to support it

some guy just put these pics up on Pirate4x4, he used the dodge x-member I talked about, and cut it down so it'd fit inside the Chevy framerails:





It's kinda dark, but the x-member is sorta contoured to the top of the t-case, and the bolts come up through it.

'70s IHC TravelAlls had divorced NP205s hung from a cradle set on L-brackets bolted to the frame. Best part is '70s TravelAll frame rails are the same distance apart as 67-72 4x4 frame rails. I have both a '71 TravelAll and two '71 4x4 burbs and one K20 4x4 pickup. I measured between the inside of the frame rails on my TravelAll and my K20 burb. Exactly the same.

So, maybe you can source an IHC NP205 cradle. I'm assuming your NP205 would bolt right up to an IHC cradle.

thanks for the tip. i have a crossmember that i tried to make work yesterday but its not the right contour and so the transfer doesnt sit right. i will start lookin for an IHC thanks

I was out trying to figure out how to make something work and it looks like i need to use a 2 wheel drive crossmember for the transmission or it will sit to low. is that right or does it just look like it sits too low. i have a crossmember from a 2 wheel drive that looks like it is higher.

My dad used divorced 205's is a couple 4x4 conversions quite a few years back. He used the dodge crossmember in the first one and had alot of problems with the u-joints wearing out in the driveshaft between the transmission and transfer case.
He built a brace for it later and it seemed to solve the u-joint wear problem.

The second conversion he didn't have a crossmember so he built one out of square tubing. When he did this one he made the crossmember wider, (longer fore and aft in relation to the frame), and never had any problems with it.

personally, i'd keep it as close to straight back from the tranny as i could, so the jack shaft wouldn't wear out fast. i'd do the same as trevor also, make the front and rear shafts the same length, and make the jackshaft to fit. but that is my opinion.

Ask your driveshaft maker what the smallest length jackshaft he can build. That will determine your minimum length back from the tranny yoke. IIRC, a slipjoint jackshaft must be almost a foot long, but I'm no DS expert.

BTW, the size yokes/U-joints you use determines part of the minimum length.

hey thanks guys i talked to a knowledgeable 4x4 guy today i found out that the jackshaft should be about a foot and the angle should be 2-4 degrees. he suggested not to have the front as long as the back because the output bearing on the transfer wont hold up on the front
