gave up trying to find a small block 4l80 cover so i cut the two i had apart and welded them back together.

Waiting on a clocking ring for the 241 and mocking up the exhaust, getting closer.

Re: Simple TBI build

I guess I'm out of the loop on cam failures due to newer motor oil additive formulations. I haven't seen nor heard of an alarming number of failures. Just guys reporting they know a guy who's brother in law damaged a camshaft and they surmised it must have been the oil that caused it because SN can't be as good as the old SD was.

Not sure what SN and SD is but its a known fact that the oil companys stopped adding the anti-wear zddp quite a while ago. Some oils do still have it but very low amounts of it. Some are designed to have it purposely like Brad Penn oil. Check out Team Chevelle, plenty of cam failure stories over there. This isnt something new, been about the last 15 years or so.

brake lines

Just about ready to fire this motor sometime next week, All of the small details suck up so much time.

I have been meaning to share info about custom brake lines. Some of you will love it, some will be skeptical.
I ordered longer lines from a vendor once and threw them in the trash. It was a braided hose with a handful of fittings to make them adapt.

I then found a local company that will make DOT approved lines exactly like the OEM or from braided and at whatever length you want. The beauty is it is cheaper than the junk for sale.

Now that i live 500 miles from them they still did my work, I sent them in a flat rate box with a return label inside.

Take a look.

braze the OEM banjo to new MADE IS USA line

new ends

I run them on all of my projects (ford and jeep have smoked braided stainless) and couldn't be happier. The company is ALLhose on Post rd in Las Vegas. They normally do not do mail order stuff but if you called them ahead I am sure they would make them for you. Or you could PM me and i could tell you who to talk to.

MOD=== this is not an advertisement, please do not delete. It might help some members for a custom project.

Thanks,

Re: Simple TBI build

I started it tonight, set the timing real quick and checked for leaks. Brake drums come on Wednesday so i hope to be 100% by the weekend.

Break in

Motor fired right up, ran for about 30 minutes with zero codes. did a little data logging ( not really worth much not driving around) and the computer was having no issue with the cam.

My oil pressure sits at 30psi not running and pegs high when i start it. Just another headache to deal with,, I assume it is the sender. If anyone knows the answer to this sender and can save me a headache it would be great.

This weekend i will have the truck out and report back with data and with any changes to the bin if necessary. If i can, i will make a video.

I've got one step up Lunati cam, but it's going in my 402. Did you have a smooth idle or a little lumpy?

Honestly the cam sounds stock.

I am running headers with a magnaflow cat and the OEM muffler.

Perfect! What kind of idle vacuum are you seeing?

I have not put a vac gauge on it yet, the MAP reading in the data show ~32-35.

I will have a better reading next time logging

Picklito,

Finally put a gauge on it, 17.5 inch at 700 rpm.

Here is a short video of the cam sound, this is with the headers, 2.5 exhaust into a single 3", magnaflow cat and stock muffler. can not get it to load to the site so the links takes you to photobucket

Great to hear, hopefully iit will stay code free while driving.

Re: Simple TBI build

Nice build!

I wouldn't be surprised if you get an egr code after driving it a while. I had this problem and was told running headers causes it. Something about too free flowing of an exhaust not allowing the egr to heat up. I had Harris Performance reprogram the chip not to read egr and that solved the problem of the light. I also switched to a heated O2 sensor.

Good luck with the rest of the build!

With the old exhaust system I had to switch to the heated 02 sensor. With the new exhaust I installed the bung in the driver collector and installed the single wire (non heated) 02 hoping it would read ok. During the break-in the ECM would go into closed loop only when the RPM would go above ~1500. If left at an idle it would drop out, I am guessing the exhaust was not hot enough for the sensor to read.

I will be installing the 3wire 02 now. The single was more of a "what if".

Not sure how to load excel file for the data if any of you are interested. The one thing i notice is i have a high knock count. I will look into that.

Re: Simple TBI build

Thanks for the follow-up! Sounds great. What's your initial timing? I'm wondering if there's a little more vacuum to be found with a little more idle advance?

the initial timing is set at zero, ( wire unhooked). I have not experimented with the tune. I just ran it 50+ miles on the highway this morning and it runs so nice i might not fool with it.

Re: Simple TBI build

I thought i would share a update after 500 miles.

I couldn't be happier with the setup. Next tank i will check the millage and report back. The truck runs through the gears fast and gets up to speed so easy i forgot what the old tired motor felt like. The gears and OD possibly make a bigger improvement than the motor.

I do get a soft code ( i think it is the EGR) once in a while if i am driving real light throttle at cruise speed. It resets when the key is turned off and does not reappear for days. Next time it happens i will try to grab the reading before it resets. If it is the EGR, i got the same code before the new motor so i do not think it is cam related.

As for the cam (flat vs roller). I do not think i will be upgrading the heads or to a roller. The motor has nice instant throttle and for 90% of my driving it has more than enough power. I also do not think the worries about the oil is justified on a stock valve train at .450 lift. If it were a .650 lift with huge spring pressure i could see the need maybe.

I hope this thread helped someone.

Ditto, thanks for the update!

See a lot of these threads get started and then never have any resolution. Always cool to hear it get finished and how it turned out. Chalk this one up as a known good formula!
