454 long block ... an instant lowering kit or rebuild potential?

I have a 454 with heads, etc. that either needs to be salvaged, rebuilt, or continue to serve as a lowering kit for my LWB 1971 that just today got on the road. Actually, with a 2" lower front (coil springs), it rides NICE with a load (454 block maybe too much) in the back IMHO. I looked up the numbers and it's a 1994 mfg. but I don't know what it came out of. . 2 Questions for opinions:

1. Don't our trucks ride and handle great with a load (forget about the gas)?!
2. Would a BBC rebuild be nice to learn on and keep in reserve when my '68 327 goes Tit$ Up?

Your knowledge and experience is why I appreciate this board and it's members.
thanks.
