Temp Gauge help needed
Just wrapping up my restore and can't seem to get the temp gauge to register at all. I was told that the wire is a green wire and I found one in the harness that had a clip on the end. I snapped it on the sensor and nothing. I found another green wire back by the firewall but I haven't hooked it up yet. How I know which green wire it is and if I have the right wire connected, what else can it be?

There are 2 dk green wires from the firewall, one for the horn and one for the temp sensor. Also I think there are 2 different connector possibilities for the sensor and connector match, but if your connector fits on your sensor then you must have the right wire and matching connections. So likely you just need to try a new sensor. They're cheap as I remember, just make sure you get the right one for your connector.

pretty good info here on temp. gauge. there's a wealth of info on this site. sometimes I can find it and sometimes I can't.

Your temp gauge should peg out if grounded. Like said above, two green wires, the horn on mine is a normal female spade.
If you can't connect the temp wire to a ground (because the shape of connector) grab a jumper wire and hook it to ground, if it doesn't max out the gauge, you have something else wrong. Don't quite remember troubleshooting senders, as I almost never have one go bad. But the colder it is, the more resistance (ohms) the hotter it is, the less resistance. I suppose either a manual, or manufacturer of that sender would have the ohms numbers to check. But I'd start with grounding the green wire, then trace (visually) make sure it goes to the dash, and to the temp gauge, then if needed start tearing that apart, make sure the wires are there, secure, in good shape, etc.

I have a green wire laying across my engine, is this the one that should go to a ground? Should it go to the block or any ground? My sensor was working and I did some work replacing the distributer and it stopped after that...

harv: he meant to just touch it to any good ground and see if you temp gauge moves to hot, not to mount it to ground, if you have just messed with the dist. you may have unplugged it . have someone turn on the key and watch the gauge while you touch the wire to ground...

Thats right Ole Dollor, I was talking about grounding the green wire to see if the gauge moves to hot. It did and therefore, I replaced the temp sending unit and it all is working now. Yahoo!
