Chassis Component identification

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to thank everyone in advance again for all of the help you guys give it is greatly appreciated.

I put the rear wheels on the dually today, and I had a couple of questions on chassis parts as I don't know what they are for.

The first one is the two brackets on each side of the rear section of the chassis, that is directly above the rear springs. I assume they are some type of mount for the tray?

The Second photo is some type of hinge bracket that is on the back side of a chassis cross member, facing the back of the truck.

The other question I have is In regards to rust repair panels.

I have three I need to do, the Outer Cowl, Inner Cowl and rear Lower Cab Section. I was just wanting to get your opinion on installing these myself?

I can weld ok, but not expert. Im concerned in damaging the body, Or should I just pay someone to install these patch panels?

Thanks Shane

Re: Chassis Component identification

If these are what you talking in the first picture they are for the over load springs. When extra weight is on the truck these brackets will sit on the springs for added support. You will see that the short springs line up perfectly under these brackets.

Re: Chassis Component identification

Thanks Sweetbeast that does make sense.

All I need to do know is find out what the other "Hinge" is.

Thanks Shane

Re: Chassis Component identification

I have no idea what the bracket in the second photo goes to unless it is part of a spare tire holder. It looks like it was added to the truck later after it was at the dealership. did the truck have a hoist on it at one time?

Re: Chassis Component identification

Mr48chev,

I dont know what this truck had as far as I do know it was just a steel and wood flatbed.

It looks factory, but as the frame has been newly painted everything looks factory.

thanks

Shane

Re: Chassis Component identification

Unless you can figure out a use for it I'd say just unbolt it and take it off. Just hanging there it looks like the source of a nice squeak when you are running down the road.

Re: Chassis Component identification

The hinge is called the Cross Shaft Assembly where the e-brake attaches to go to the cab? The individual cams attach to the e-brake cables that go to the backing plates?
If you have a factory manual take a look at Section 5, Sheets 4.00 & 4.01.

Re: Chassis Component identification

That setup is on the half ton trucks. This is a 1-1/2 ton or larger truck.

The emergency brake on Andsonsvd's truck is on the transmission and uses a lever that sits next to the shift handle.. I'm not finding anything in the assembly manual and that still makes me believe that that bracket/ lever was part of something that was added onto the truck later.

Re: Chassis Component identification

Mr48Chev,

It seems to be factory it is mounted into the frame and looks very standard.
