Center Caps for Rally wheels

Does anyone have a picture of the back side of a Sombrero center cap?

I have a 66 C10 with Disc brakes. The front hub sticks out too far to use the smaller Disc Brake center caps. So I bought the 1952 larger caps. They are deeper, but also bigger diameter. They hit the face of the wheel before they clip in. I bought these clips to use the Sombrero caps, but hoping to use the larger caps I just got today. I'm wondering if I can just put washers behind the clips? Keep adding washers until the clips snap in place?

Thank you.

Tom,

If you go to Google Images and type in "rally wheel center cap", it will bring up many pics of all the Rally caps and there are some pics of the back of them.

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

Has anyone tried other center caps with these wheels? These appear to be early 70s to late 80s wheels. It doesn't seem like these clips will work with either of the caps I have.

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

The only other cap I have ran cross that many people are using is just the standard truck rally cap. Either the ones that have a 4x4 decal on them or the Chevy bowtie. You know the ones that just mount with three screws and directly to the wheel . Like you I am trying to figure out a way to mount the disc brake caps to my wheels. Problem the hub sticks out too far. Sound familiar? I have some ideas though.

Yes, a few year battle. The 1952 caps in my picture have the clearance, but I need to figure out how to hold them on.

I just looked at the back of one of those 1952 caps. I see the problem you are having. Just no way to hold them on. There has to be a simple solution to both our problems, we just haven't found it yet. The search continues.

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

I think one of the bigger issues you are having with trying to run the caps that you have is that you are trying to put car rally wheels on truck rally wheels. They are different. The factory truck rally center caps bolted to the wheel. They were not clipped in

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

Nobody has suggested this so..... You could also try running a spacer behind the wheel. That would reduce the amount the spindle hub protrudes through the wheel center.

Newer caps as is the later model truck caps? They attach w/plastic threaded covers that thread onto conversion lug-nuts.

I was able to attach these by using the original rally wheel bolts through the back of the wheel. The lug nuts are standard acorn lug nuts and allow a lug wrench to be used. Not threaded covers.

I never said it was the only way.... What I listed is the way 90% of people attach them.

All good- the only thing I was saying is what my experience was.

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

I dont have any actual pics of mine but on rally wheels they normally will attach with bolts through the front of the cap. On these later model caps 1996 maybe? They normally attach like ScotI said with lugnut caps that are threaded onto the lug nuts. What I found was that the back of the caps have studs? that match up to the three holes on the back of the wheel. So I drilled the cap studs and used a self tapping screw to attach from the back side. I found a couple of pics on the internet that may help.

Clean install & good idea.

Re: Center Caps for Rally wheels

There was a gentleman a few years back that machined the 70's/80's 5 lug rally cap to accept a 60's Nova disc brake button, to replace the OE bowtie sticker... that was a different twist, but I don't remember the members name ... I have a set of the 5 lug caps and wanted to do the same thing on my lathe at school, but haven't taken the time to plan it out....
