Is it s 72 or not

Hello,
Just purchased a 1972 K10. I have to drop the first letter of the VIN to get it to decode properly. Numbers run as a 1972 4X4 V8, but the rear view mirror is on the overhead and not on the glass. It was my understanding that all 72s had the mirror on the windshield. Could it be the owner replaced the rear view with and older unit. Would there have been a place to mount the older mirror

thanks

You are correct that all 72s had a mirror, and it was glued to the glass. But they fall off from the heat, and your location sounds REAL hot.
I am personally one step away from mounting an old style mirror on my 72 suburban.

Re: Is it s 72 or not

You are correct about the heat. I can see that there was a mirror on the window at one time. Any thoughts on the VIN. I have to drop the first letter to get it to run on the VIN decoder. I understand the model number is in the glove box, but I can't find it. Would love to learn more about the truck. It is a SWB with bucket seats and console.

thanks

Re: Is it s 72 or not

I think all the 72s had an extra c at the beginning, and the gmcs had a t in the vin. Not sure why, maybe longhornman will clear that one up.

Look in the back of the seat for the build sheet.

Re: Is it s 72 or not

thanks for the info, but no sticker in the glove box and the seats have new covers. Will dig a little deeper.

The engine looks to be original except for the edelbrock carb. Unfortunately she is sick and will need to be pulled for overhaul starting next week. Going to collect casting numbers off the block and heads to see what I have.

Jacked up rear end and counted rotation. Looks like I have a non posi end with 3.78 ratio. Need all I can get with the 35 inch tires. Sits well, not too lifted.

My youngest son has quit driving the vette and claimed the truck. Owned it once about 5 years ago. Every week he would ask when I was going to buy it back. Traded it for a daily driver with the condition that I would have first opportunity to buy it back. Got it back with a new carb, transmission and working air plis a set of new tires for the same price that I sold it for. Some days are just too good to be true.

Oh yeah. Dry heat is still hot! But it's not humid, and that is the difference. I was stationed in Tucson, during which I took a 179 day "vacation" to VietNam, from Aug. 69 to Mar. 71. If you like the desert (I did) it's great. If you don't, don't stay.

When the temp is 100 on the streets at 10PM, it's hot. When you drive and hit an arroyo, the cool air in the arroyo feels like a cold blast of arctic air. Sweat dripping from your armpits feels like a piece of ice when it hits your skin below, too. Swamp coolers were our friends.

Whats an arroyo?
I've spent a few months at Ft Irwin in the desert of Cali... I hated the heat, but it was better than the soup heat we get here.

Re: Is it s 72 or not

I never thought the desert heat was too bad, being from Kansas with 100+ and humidity. The worst palace in this whole country has do be Mississippi in the delta region. I used to have to go work with people there and had to change dress shirts 3 times a day.
