Just a thought...lol

I don't mind If this needs to be moved

So I was talking to the wife today about buying our first home and jokingly asked about living above a shop and she says.........sure........ as long as we have a bathroom and kitchen so on and so forth and our future kids don't have to share a bedroom to I'm OK with it. finally more room to work on my toys!!!!!! lol so what do you guys think of something like this?

I personally love it! why build a garage on to a house...when you could put a little bit of house on a whole lot of garage!

Re: Just a thought...lol

So im thinking of walling in the left garage space and making it my paint type room...well really just a room to keep the others clean

and then have a two car and a shop <- "being the right one"

and to separate the shop and the garage spots ill build a really big rolling work bench

Re: Just a thought...lol

That's a sweet idea!!! Something I would love to do, currently saving for a house, looking at some to make sure it has either a 2 car garage and/ or external garage to do work in.
Good luck with that and awesome your wife is cool with it

Re: Just a thought...lol

I looked at plans like this before we built the house we are in now. As a certified car nut, I love the idea.

I wouldnt do a spray booth or anything under it. And wouldnt run a car unless I had all the bays open with fans blowing out the fumes (if at all). I have a three car garage on my house now. And wish I had at least one more bay.

Re: Just a thought...lol

I agree with the one above

I didnt really mean paint booth more like some where to grind if I need.

and you might be surprised we lived in a truck for about 3 months and she never once complained

Re: Just a thought...lol

The funny thing is there is a house simular to your plan that was for sale a few miles from my house. I showed it to my wie thinking it would be be nice for us to buy as a second property. I could have a larger shop plus a place for the kids to ride dirt bikes and stuff bacuse it had some land. I was shocked to learn that the price tag as $179,000 becuse it came with a house on top. I would have never guessed it was a house. It looked like just a nice big work shop.

Re: Just a thought...lol

Your plans look great.

My brother and I were talking the other day about how cool it would be to have a building built about 80' by 100' and then build living quarters inside it for him. Since he is single and plans to stay that way it sounds like a great idea, but may never happen.

We live out in the country on a small farm so room to build would not be a problem. Also we would not have to worry about permits in our state/county. We just will have to wait and see how things turn out.

Re: Just a thought...lol

looks great, the only thing I would recommend is to make the first floor a little taller, 9' isnt tall enough if you want to add a two or four post lift!

I agree. I would put two doors on the front and four on the back. Give it a traditional look from the street.

You might want to consider project 67 sub's advice on a third floor. Once those future kids start arriving, that living space might begin to feel a bit cramped....

I really like that idea and it would be easy to clean out and move projects!

yes I agree I was trying to figure out the best way to build on to this structure.

do you guys think a third story or something on the side would be best? of course either one would be done at the building time
