I have a 54' 3800 .

How can I tell which engine is in it ???

What gear ratios were available in 54 ???

you may be able to get that info from the GMheritage center. check online for the contact info. they are pretty good about getting back to you as well. they will need the vin.
the engine should have a number on it but posting a pic would also help.

you could also try here, their manuals are a little spotty on some stuff but they do have specs like that for a lot of stuff.

That shows the options that were available when the truck was built. GM in the states wasn't great about keeping records for the old vehicles though. And over time people love swapping engines, transmissions, and axles so you should plan on doing detective work to learn what is actually installed in your truck.

Do you have any pictures of the truck? If you plan to do a significant amount of work to it you might want to start a "build thread" to share your progress.

By checking the engine serial number against this you can see if it is the stock engine that came with the truck pretty easily. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm

Note: the engine serial number will not match the number stamped on the door post tag. That didn't come about until 1972 in most cases when the feds wanted more vehicle Id numbers on major parts of the vehicles. http://www.nastyz28.com/decode.php
