GM used Dana 44 front axles untl 1976. In 1978 they switched to 8.5" 10 bolts. ~1979 the one ton trucks had a Dana to until about 1985. Very desireable and pricey. 10 bolt cover is nearly perfectly round, Dana 44 is not. Both have 10 bolts in the cover, however.

Axle ID
77 was the first year for the D60 front to go in a GM rig. And I believe that 91 was the last year that they did that. I know that 91 was the last year you could get a SFA in a Blazer or Suburban and I think that goes for the 1 tons. On the 3/4 ton rigs till 1976 they had the external hubs, not to be confused with a D60. They have big honkin hubs and the axle is classed as a Heavy Duty. Internaly they are the same as the 6 lug ones but the axle tubes are a 1/2" thick. The easiest way to tell the difference between a D60 and a D44, corp 10 bolt is that the D60 has 3 u-bolts. A D44/10bolt has 4. Instead of the 4th u-bolt a D60 has studs in the housing.

'79 was still using dana 44 front, front 8.5" corp 10 bolt came around a couple years later by '82
dana 44 looks identical to a dana 60, irregular cover, to round-ish like a GM corp 10 bolt(american axle corp) front and rear 10 bolt are the same exct 8.5" 10 bolt* good luck |

My buddies '78 chevy he bought new had the 10 bolt in the front. I'll stick with my statement on '76 being the last. Maybe the one you had was swapped in? COuld have been some overlap I guess. In buying 4x4 parts the last 15 years, that seems to be the break point. The 12 bolt and the 10 bolt rear were both available at the same time so maybe same scenario?

i dunno man, i have yet to see anything before 82 with a 10 bolt front, ive seen 78 3/4 ton with 44 front and a 79 K10 with a 44 and never anything 70-anything with nothing but a 44 or 60, and these trucks definitely not been swapped out, are junk beater plow trucks, nothing that anyone in their right mind would take trouble to swap an axle out for,,, lol
i know for a fact that 79 was still dana 44 year in gm trucks, 10 bolt corp were 80's-up thing. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showfla...c=1&PHPSESSID= blazers anyways: http://coloradok5.com/specs.shtml good luck Last edited by Fast68Chevy; 10-04-2002 at 11:12 PM. |
