Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

Wanting to buy a receiver hitch for my 71 regular bumper. I searched for some reference pics or info. but no luck finding an answer for the spare tire fit. I'm looking at the Curt 14082 and I see posts on fit for bumper and license plates but can somebody tell me if the spare tire assy will still fit with that hitch without a lot of modification or know of another class IV that will? Thanks

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

If it's an application for these trucks, then it should be made taking in consideration the spare tire hold all these trucks had unless the side-mount was optioned. You should ask curt, unless someone here already has experience with what you want to do. my truck came to me with a custom fabricated hitch with brackets made to go wide around the optional (more massive) drop and swing spare tire mount

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

On The website it says:
Notes:
•Fits with a full-size spare tire under the vehicle
•Trailer hitch weight ratings are limited to vehicle manufacturer's stated capacities
•Includes installation hardware

In the 152 COMPATIBLE VEHICLES -the 67-72 is not listed but comes up in the search method.

I 2nd the advice to call them.

Maybe some one will chime in that has bought one.

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

I know front frame rail spacing on the front is the same as 73-87. I believe it is on the rear. If they can't say it'll fit, run that by them and see what they say

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

The only hitch they list for the 71 is a class 3 13099. The later 1975+ year the 14082 is listed for them. Ive tried calling but they must be closed for the Thanksgiving holidays. I was hoping somebody that had one could verify as I can get one this week for %25 off and free shipping Blk Fri sale from Advance auto. I'll try calling again throughout the day as I have the factory helper springs as well.

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

I have the Curt 13028 mounted on a 71 GMC longbed 1/2 ton big block truck. I bought it from Amazon a year ago or so for $89 with free shipping on Prime day. It works great and the spare fits fine. It also clears the dealer installed step bumper as well.

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

Turns out Curt makes it for u-haul and the local u-haul had it in stock. The u-haul number is 41803 for the 14082. U-haul lists it as a fit for the 71. I drove down to check it out and it appears it will go fine. I may have to put a spacer to accommodate the extra helper spring brackets. I can order it for $159 today from Advance so I'll post some pics of the install after I get it in.

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

Here's the original hitch. Not sure if it was dealer installed or just an aftermarket. It attached to the bumper and up and over the spare tire. The spare I have is a large full size tire. The other possible obstacle was the optional helper springs

Re: Spare tire fit with trailer hitch

The hitch had to have new holes drilled in the frame and the spare tire bolt relocated just a little bit. I butted it up against the helper spring mounts. On this particular bumper I had to cut a notch in it to clear the receiver end. Tire cleared fine. Receiver was back a little further out the rear but could have been set back some more if it wasn't for the helper spring perches. While I was at it I replaced the tail gate wood grain panel with a new one.
