1963 or 1960? need advice/info.

I recently came across a Chevy Stepside (can't recall if was a shortbed or longbed) and was told that it was a 1963 but the hood appears to be different than others I have seen on a 63' (or at least in photos). It seems like the hood is for a 1960? I am considering making an offer on the truck but would like others to comment on the attached photos. What are the price range of solid trucks that need restoration? Apparently, the engine (unknown size was recently rebuilt).

By the way, how do you open the hood on this truck (inside handle or is there a latch that you access through the grille?)

Where can I find the VIN stamp on the truck?

Any help is greatly appreciated on what to look for.

That's a '60 grille and hood inserts, and the Apache emblem on the fenders is the right location for '60... Someone could have changed the whole front sheetmetal package though.

VIN is located inside the driver's side door opening, on the windshield pillar, about eye level. Find the VIN decoder on this site, and it'll tell you the year for sure.

Looks like a shortbed, right?

It looks like a long stepper to me. How much rust, how's it run? That affects value.

If you have access to the truck, look underneath and see if it has an x-frame. 60-62 were x-frame.

The '60-'62's had the torsion bar front suspension as well as the X-member frame that LostMy65 mentioned. The '63 and up had a coil spring front suspension and the typical ladder style frame.

Front bumper bolt spacing suggests '60-'62 frame.

No rot. Looks like a very solid body. Owner is looking for 2500. Thoughts?

Here in the Midwest $2500 would be a reasonable price for a running driving truck with little rust and good title/vin.

Good. Be objective, don't let your desire for a truck overcome reality.

Bring a magnet. Flat black paint always makes me think that something is being hidden.

$2500 for a running, driving, rot-free truck--if it turns out to be those things--is a great deal.

I'd fly out from Georgia and drive it home for $2,500.

Does it have a title? If so you be damn sure that the truck vin matches the numbers on that title before you hand over them Franklins!

Re: 1963 or 1960? need advice/info.

I took a look at the truck. Definitely a long bed and definitely a 1960. The truck has been sitting for a while and I didn't try to start it when I saw that the truck had a salvaged title. This is a deal breaker for me.

I am sure there are some decent trucks out there with salvaged titles, I am just one of those guys that tries to stay away from salvaged titles, especially on classics.

Thanks guys for the help.
