LT1 drivetrain possible option for Burb ....

A friend of a friend gave me some info on a donor vehicle for a possible drivetrain swap for my '62 Burb.

It's a '94 Buick Roadmaster.

It suffered front end bumper damage when girl was making a left turn.

Currently has 130K miles on it, and car is complete.

My buddy went over this morning, and jumped it with his civic, and it fired up and ran like a top.

After accident, it was driven to its current resting spot.

I'm considering it (even though its not my first choice) but the engine, tranny and rear axle are tempting ....

Thoughts ??

He checked out the engine, and say the optispark area is oily (common leak area)

He mentioned its one of those things ... "if your gonna change the seal, might as well change the optispark, might as well change the waterpump..."

Yeah, but do that and it is a pretty decent piece. Those were rated at 260 HP in that car. Not too shabby for pulling around a land yacht; it would probably do a lot better in the Suburban. If you relocate the A/C compressor, it will bolt right in place of a small block, too.

You could convert it to carb, and dizzy.

This will make it easier to set up, and adds torque because of the dual plane intake.

Forgot to mention, I would be paying $400-$450 for this car, that will probably drive itself onto my trailer.

Carb and dizzy would be nice, but I think keeping it injected is the way I wanna go.

On my '79, whoever swapped the engine in originally used an inline pump, so the original tank was used. If you were going to leave it injected, that is a possibility. I would go ahead and get an aftermarket harness and have the PCM programmed to get rid of VATS, and roll. With the connectors being in the heat for 20 years, an new harness is cheap insurance, just from that standpoint. I have used www.fuelinjectionconnection.com with pretty good results.

Well, I ended up talking the women down to $400 !!

I took it for a ride, and I was laying rubber for like 200 feet, and got a couple of donuts out of her ...

Runs pretty dam good ...

It's definitely not a car to drive if your extremely tired, as it is super cushy.

Turns out, it out weighs the Burb by about 500lbs, and has a 5000 tow capacity .... Should be a decent drivetrain.

Rear axle gears are definitely high (2.93), and unfortunately not a disk axle, but it might find its way into the Burb ....

I would definately grab it, the only difference between that motor and the camaro or vette LT1 is it has cast iron heads. Just but the manual for that car and start peeling wires out of the harness that you don't need. You can even use your stock tank, just cut the fuel pump flange out of that caprice fuel tank and weld it in to yours. Pretty easy swap if you have everything.

Buick utilized the LT-1 for its full-sized sedan and station wagon, the Roadmaster. This engine was essentially identical to the one that the Caprice Wagon used, since they are on the same platform. It produced 260 hp and 330 foot-pounds of torque. It had a bore of 4 inches and a 3.48 inch piston stroke. The compression ratio was set at 10.5:1. The LT-1 pushed the Roadmaster to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Once I disable all the emissions, better exhaust, and some tunes ..... I should be over 300.

Plenty for me. I'm just glad to finally have a complete running donor for $400 !
