Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

I haven't decided if I will be painting it this year or next year. I'm leaning more toward next spring at the moment. It will stay white with the black accents. I doubt I'll change it up at all since I like the way the color looks now. There is minimal body work that needs done so I should be able to knock it out in a weekend with no problems. Heres a quick walk around of it I did earlier today. There's a spot on the front driver side of the hood and the driver side fender that needs some attention. Aside from that it's in great shape

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

I just about wrapped the exhaust up. The block hugger headers took a little work to make just right, my biggest problem was the air pump oil return line running to the pan.

I went with 2-1/2" mandrel bent tubing I fabricated, tig welded it all and ran it all the way out the back of the truck. I bought a set of used factory mufflers but decided not to use them and went with a set of 2 chamber mufflers. While I was at it I went ahead and put an H pipe on it too.
It's hard to believe how much the exhaust woke the truck up! I swear it felt like it added 50 horsepower! It doesn't sound bad at all either and where I put the mufflers there is next to no drone inside the cab either.

Pictures to come soon. I need to install 2 more hangers and it's done.

Exhaust looks great! Now we need a video so we can hear what it sounds like!

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

I can do that tomorrow hopefully. I haven't had time to figure out how to put in a couple hangers on the rear of the exhaust. I may just make a custom bracket rubber mounted. I hope to get that resolved this weekend since I actually get a couple of days off. I went from feeling like my ears were going to bleed everytime I drove it to only being able to hear the air pump pumping under the hood now! It sounds like your typical big block Chevy. I don't want to say I'm exactly happy with the sound but I'm also not disappointed either. I wanted 0 rasp and just a deep tone. I have a deep tone and a little rasp, I can live with it.

I also had to replace the wiring on the 2 speed switch. They crumbled and the $65 was well worth spending.

Currently I've been working on the interior. I pulled the seat out, cleaned the mess up that looks like it's been there for 10 years, cleaned and treated any surface rust then shot a couple layers of bed liner down on the floor. Next I'm going to get something to help make it a little quieter in the cab while driving and get a new rubber mat for it.

One of the next things on my list is a new carb. I don't know how accurate my tach is but I believe that is way off also. At 45 mph my tach is around 3200 rpm. I thought the rear end was stuck in low... It's definitely not! Anything over those "rpms" the engine really starts to throw a fit!

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

As promised, this was a cold start. She sounds a little obnoxious at the back like in the video. In the cab and anywhere else around the truck she's quiet believe it or not.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

only thing i can say is watch the exhaust heat on plastic wires / air lines and such . i had a trailer plug get 3/4 melted one time as it fell in the way of the exhaust tip for 20 miles on the highway .

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

That's exactly why I decided to run it all the way out the back instead of dumping it after the mufflers.

50 gallon saddle in on it now. I still need to hook it up though.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

For anyone who may be watching I got some more work done. It's not much but I'm still at it
http://imgur.com/gallery/yoqxclI
Turns out I have a bad cam and a compression test revealed cylinder #7 has low compression, it's at 140 psi vs all the others being 165-180 psi. It's not terrible but I'm going to pull it and do a full rebuild.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

The engine is out and all but the crank has been pulled out today. A lot of the lobes are gone on the cam. It's been rebuilt before. I'm going to have to have it bore over. I don't have my calipers here at home, I'll bring them home tomorrow to see how much it will have to be over.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

Here's a picture of the fuel tank I put on awhile back... I'm uploading pictures directly from my phone now so no one has to click on a second party link. In this picture the exhaust is on, I didn't want to be able to see it from this view at all and I think I nailed keeping it tucked up and out of view.

Also the new aluminum plate on the back of the truck is installed. A picture on the first page shows the smaller thinner, rusty and heavy old plate I replaced.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

Some exhaust porn... all painted with flat black exhaust paint because I hate rust but didn't want to go ss. All tig welded together, 2-1/2" mandrel bent exhaust I bought and ran how I wanted it and I put an H pipe in it because it never hurts. I made a nice hanger for the rear of the exhaust above the rear end (not pictured yet) and installed other hangers so don't mind the temporary wire holding everything up in the pictures. The exhaust is as quiet as can be inside the cab but has a but of rasp and rumble out the rear but I can't really hear it from inside the cab, I'm still debating pointing the back of the exhaust out so it's not pointing at the ground.

Aluminum diamond plate again... I'll be adding more to the steps on both sides leading into the cab. The current steps are rusty and I hate the way they look. They're not cut to fit very well and I'm a little too anal to let that go.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

Out with the old floor mat and 50 years of crud, fixed some rust, coated with 2 coats of undercoating, sound dampening added to the floor/doors/under the dash and anything else that made noise when I knocked on it. New pad laid down and a temporary rubber piece laid out (not pictured) until I get a new floor mat for her. Believe it or not those speakers still work, I'll probably reuse the boxes since they were made pretty nicely but new speakers are on the list too later down the road. I had to get a new switch for the 2 speed on the shifter also which is pictured, the old wires were corroded beyond repair which is what I've found is normal given her age.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

I uploaded most of these pictures backward, the trans and engine are currently back out. Here's the new ring gear on the flywheel, the rebuilt dual disc clutch I had rebuilt (insanely priced!), flywheel resurfaced, and the trans. You're all up to date on my progress now.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

Wow! I'm very surprised your Passenger Side inner fender is in such good condition! I had to scavenge 2 to make 1 good one since the battery and lack of drainage caused both inner fenders to have gaping holes in them.

Look really nice!

Thanks! I do have some fab work to do on the battery tray. I was impressed myself at how well it all turned out. It's all one color now and clear coated.

Re: 69 C60 Mega Truck Hauler

I managed to get another 427 off of Craigslist the other day. I got it for a great deal, did a compression test on it and it looked good. I pulled it apart and there are still cross hatches in the cylinders, the story was it was pulled out of a C65 that was scrapped and the engine ran strong but the truck was rusted out. Now that I have it apart I believe everything the guy I bought it from told me about it. I'm going to put all new gaskets in it, clean it up and drop it in. It came complete carb (newish carb) to pan with a transmission. The trans has the same dual disc clutch that my original trans has. I have a spare for everything now.
