tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

hey guys, i wanna get my truck tubbed or mini tubbed before next years race season and see if itll help with my times as im currently saving up for a big ol' motor. If anyone knows how to professionally tub one of our style trucks and have it look good after i would love to get as much info as i can. I have all winter to do this and by no means have the time or money to cut corners and have cheap looking work.

Re: tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

From what I've been around the frame can stay the same width. A lot of trucks get the frame boxed in the hanger/shackle area and then remove the spring/hanger/shacker assemblies from the outside of one side to the inside of the other huh? This keeps the ride/payload the same and you can do the usual C notch if you want it lower. Just add ladder bars and go racing. Double the inner fenders.

Re: tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

Ahh....I was suggesting the cheap route! Your doing the real deal.
By the way, what I was talking about, you can use your truck rear or a Camaro rear, or even an S10 rear. Preferably the 8.5" one. The wheel back space does the rest. You'll have $4k plus in that settup before even thinking about wheels and tubs! Doing my Malibu...estimates were around $8k for everything.

If it hooks like that you don't need any more. You get more traction than that it things start to break...$$$$$$$

If your going to back-half it then tubs are a minor concern. Your going to need someone that has the knowledge to get the back half straight and connected properly. If they have that knowledge, they already know how to tub your bed too....

Here's on that belonged to the late Ken Caminiti. It had 700+ hp.....

Re: tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

Going quick in a truck is such fun! I had a BBC 68 that went 9.9's in a 1000' back around 1990. That was fast for the times and driven daily. Really loved killing the 5.0 mudstain boys! Your about to take an $$$ journey my friend Lots of PICTURES!

That's about all I would think it takes as big as the fenders on these trucks are...just hack in half and stick a chunk of sheet metal in the middle and weld it back together.

Re: tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

They are moved in about an inch farther than the framerails, that way when it goes backhalf 4-link (in about 800 more hp from now) I have more tire room...

Re: tubbing 73-87 short bed truck?

i like the article......and the idea of adding sheet metal in between the fenders to retain the stock look.
