VIN Code Help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi guys I'm fairly new to the board and have really enjoyed the time I've spent lurking around here. I have got a 68 GMC that my dad and I restored about 12 years ago. I have gotten the urge to tear back into this truck and do it all again. I guess where I am going with this I remember the first time we had alot of trouble with parts because the counter guys at the parts stores had no idea that there was any difference at all between the Chevy and GMC or even the different year models. The worst part at that time was the fact we didnt have resources of the internet that are available to me today. So I am trying to learn as many different facts about these trucks as I can. Enough with my rambling... I decided to get my title out and decode the vin today and I am running into trouble. I'm not sure if there is a type o on the title or what the deal is because the truck is at my dad's house so I can't compare numbers right now. The title says the vehicle identification number is CE10DPB49044. I used the decoder on this site and a few digits don't seem to match up. Can anybody help???

That VIN says it's a '68 2wd V8 1/2 ton wide bed and the rest is the serial number. The "P" is for the assembly plant,but I don't know which one that would be. Are you sure that's a "P" and not an "F" for Flint or a "B" for Baltimore? "S" is St. Louis which would be closest,right?

Thanks for the help! It's definately a "P" although you're right St. Louis would be the closest place to me and I know for a fact that the truck was bought new here in my home town.

C = 2wd
E = V8
1 = 1/2 ton
OD = fleetside
P = Pontiac, MI
B = 1968

Thanks for clearing that up. I should have known Pontiac. I've had trucks built there,but the reference I have doesn't show it. Well,you got in now. The only thing I'll add,and it's getting technical,but for the sake of accuracy:

C=2wd
E=V8
10=1/2 ton
D=Wideside (GMC)
P=Pontiac
B=1968

67-69 GMC uses two digits for the GVW range...10,12,or 30. So there's seven digits before the serial number. Chevy uses 1,2,and 3 and only has six digits before the serial number.
