Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

its backstory: this truck has been in my boss' (Jim) family for all its life (his grandpa bought it new). Jim told me the truck was tore down about 9yrs ago to get redone, during the juggle of going from one body guy to the next, the primer/work started to lift and began to flake from the metal. my bossman was upset and to storage it went.

here we are today. I was hired a few years back and have a little back ground in tinkering with trucks, metal fab, bodywork, etc.. he then hired another guy who has a background in paint, body and airbrushing. we have built a few vehicles now at the shop and the time has come for Jims truck. as of now we are about 2months in. We pulled it out of storage and cleaned it out. Rolled it over to our bay and the work began. We stripped all material off to get down to the metal. It looked as if the metal etching used did not bond with the primer? Once stripped down we found lots of hidden issues and started the repair work. We worked the cab over pretty good but with our time line always in a crunch we opt to order new bed panels and front fenders (we will repair the other panels later on the slow down time and reuse or sale).

once done the overall truck will be close to a stock look with some small custom things done. only thing major I guess is taking it from the 8 lug, 3/4 ton 2whl drive frame, to the new 5 lug 2whl drive frame. it'll run disc brakes in all corners, vintage air for the ac, and Dakota digital gauges.

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

With all the metal work out the way we sprayed down some TAMCO HP-5311. This is a high build primer with a direct to metal application and rust prevent in one. great stuff to use, we have used Tamco on our last 3 builds. we then sanded it all down and started working on any low spots, etc.. once done with that first round we shot another coat and wet sanded. so far so good

rolled down some paper and fixing to get everything in...but the bed, we are waiting on panels...and hopefully shoot some color on Tuesday or Wednesday. We'll shoot the GM dark blue on the body with a white cab cap.

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

We received our paint and the coloring process began. the glove box SPID said it was "572"-- White/Dark Blue. after cross-referencing, the color we are using matched the original color that someone was going to use about 9yrs ago, so I'm thinking we're on the right track. so far its coming along nicely. we will cut and buff afterwards and get ready to roll into assembly...minus the bed for now

notes for paint:

Primer: Tamco HP-5311 (direct to metal, rust prevent, high build all in one)
Sealer: ChromaBase 4 to 1, 7740S (2k urethane sealer gray shade 4)
Blue color: ChromaBase Spectramaster Blue (code: BS365) we purchased 2 gallons to be safe
White color: ChromaBase Summit White yr 85-19 (code: 8624) we had just a tad under a pint
Clear Coat: Tamco HC-4100 Glamour clear 4 to 1 mix

Projects that need to overcome frustration and disappointment on that scale are tough to get rolling again. Good work! Looks great so far.

Jim's a lucky guy to have employees who will do this for him. It's quite evident you have the skills, which makes me wonder, what kind of work do you normally do at the company?

I'll be looking forward to as many pics as you can post. Keep up the great work and you'll be finished before ya know it.

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

thanks for the compliments guys!

its funny how things have worked out for me to be where im at now and i wouldn't change it. I worked at Kicker Car Audio for about 12 yrs doing mostly Tech work, I use to help out on here in the audio forum years ago. I left Kicker to come here at J and J solutions. my main job at J and J these last 7yrs is automation and electrical, mostly in the oilfield; Oklahoma/New Mexico area. I've worked on cars mostly all my life tinkering or building on them. About 4yrs ago Jim and his boys sat down with me and discussed a plan starting a shop "Lug Nuts Classic Rides" and things just kinda started rolling. There's only me and one other guy, he's had about 8yrs under his belt painting at the local body shop and 4yrs here (very knowledgeable). We haven't done a lot outside our shop because we got projects dropped on us quickly. We are based out Perry, Oklahoma.

here's some of our work if you want to see.... https://www.facebook.com/LugnutsClassicrides/

back to the project: we are fixing to shoot the bed liner under the cab and interior of the cab.

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

The color matches really well, gives just enough offset to have a break up between the two. We used Raptor Liner color "Blue #UP4860". i was shooting the inside of the cab and went to refill only to find out we were not sent enough coloring packets so i will finish that out tomorrow morning. then come Monday maybe we can set the cab on the frame?

got all the liner color in and finished out the cab (yes, that is liner on the back of the cab in the center section), now just waiting on the cab mounts and it should go onto the frame this week. fixing to put a big order in on the interior and exterior stuff, so the fun part is about to start!

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

made some progress today. we rolled out the new chassis it'll sit on, cleaned some dust off her. seen that one of the coil springs was upside down, so flipped it over. we fired it up about 2wks ago and let her get up to temp and had no leaks, so I hope she'll hold up the rest of the days. set the cab down on some new "Energy Suspension" (part #3.4108G) cab mounts. tomorrow we'll work on getting the doors hung and installing some of the guts and maybe look into installing the American Autowire kit (part#510089)??

and if you spied the other one in the background, that's Jr....we'll start on him hopefully beginning of next year. (that poor guy gets neglected, he's so sad )

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

so we got busy with some other stuff in the yard; painted some drive racks for the field, a dozer, a wire spool trailer, and a man basket...and the paint booth took a beating.

we did get back to the truck yesterday and shot the bed panels, tailgate, and a few other pieces. wiring harness is semi installed. received our other regulator so now both doors have power windows. fixing to put the bed together today and spray the Raptor liner in its places. also caught a mistake by whoever built the rolling chassis. they sucked the U bolt over the brake line pinching it off pretty good. so we pulled those and ran new lines. that led me investigate the rest and the fuel lines are going to need redone.. better to catch now than later I guess

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

yesterday, the bed floor was broken down and cleaned up. finally got the fenders off to discover silicone/liquid nails was used to seal the fenders down?? so once we grinded down that material, we went in and applied EASTWOOD rust encapsulator along the edges, then went in with EASTWOOD seam sealer and installed the bed sides and fenders. today we rolled it over to the booth, prepped it and sprayed on the RAPTOR liner (Blue UP4860). tomorrow we will lift it off the stand and shoot the bottom. can't wait to get the bed on so it'll start looking like something

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

knocked out the hood, battery tray and fenders this morning while waiting on more blue liner to show up so we can finish out the bed. I made some inner cab fillers and shot them yesterday and went ahead and mocked them in also this morning.....slowly getting there...

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

thanks lolife99

we got our mix in and was anxious to get things going, so we mixed up a quart and I bump the shot into the corner and was like WTF.. told my buddy wrong color and sure enough we were sent navy blue. sooooo when life gives you navy blue instead of blue...you find something to shoot.... I decided to shoot one of our carts, to "weather proof" it when not in use .. so it'll be tomorrow afternoon till we get on the bed.

not sure if this will help anyone... but for a reference, here is the difference of RAPTOR liner Navy Blue (UP4861) on the cart---vs---RAPTOR liner Blue (UP4860) on the bed edge.

Re: Lug Nuts project: Jims 72' Cheyenne Super

hdff... thanks for the pics, gives me a good look at an interior setup. even though our build will be blue interior it gives me a good idea of layout.

72 tigger...thanks

mayo70... I made these panels. But you can also search and find similar ones online, some of the ones online have speaker cutouts also if you want that option. it was just hard for me to shell out the $140 for the pair when I have ability to make them. all I did was cut some cardboard up and started making a template. HEADS UP: if you do make them the corners are slightly different, so make a template for both sides. ***note*** I built mine without any flooring (carpet or matting) so your height may vary on what you have for flooring. i'm just going to sheer off what I need off once the carpet is installed, if need be. also not sure how the one's online fit but I wanted mine to go along inner part of the door so the door seal would go over them for a transition look and help hold in place along that tall edge, I also have two screws per panel at the top to hold there.

build update... we finally got the bed shot on late Friday afternoon, so we'll work on getting it on this week and hopefully getting the front clip on and start running the wire. going to have to redo the tranny lines from cooler back, they look $hitty to me...
