Neat Cupholder Idea for Factory Seat Guys

Well, i think it's pretty neat. i just finished it tonight.

i used to have a ford seat that had a removable plastic cup holder. i really liked it, but i got rid of the seat. with the freshly rebuilt, reupholstered original front seat, i needed a replacement cupholder (yesterday i managed to catch an entire HOT 16 oz. cup of coffee using only my lap and my freshly reupholstered seat. it was originally sitting on that wonderful cupholder also known as the dashboard.) anyway, i went out tonight and grabbed one off the shelf, along with a few metal braces from Lowe's, and wound up with a pretty neat solution.

i got the cupholder from autozone. it's made by a local company, so i don't know what everyone's access might be. it's called the wedgie, (thanks orange) about $5.
then i picked up a pack of 3-1/2" x 3/4" angle braces and an 8" x 1" *i think* strap. the neat thing is that it was cheap, looks OK, and is removable.

Re: Neat Cupholder Idea for Factory Seat Guys

the cool part was the way all the dimensions worked out. i used existing holes in the bottom of the seat frame (where the hog rings go) so no drilling was required, and no damage was incurred by the seat and upholstery. the holes were 8" apart, and just happened to be centered on the width of the seat. then, the holes matched up on the braces and the metal strap, which was also 8" apart. then, the mounting slots on the cupholder happened to be 8" o.c. i couldn't have planned it better from scratch.

i cut slots for the braces in the bottom of the cupholder and bent the very top of the braces out, to faciltate easy removal, while i bent the entire brace back toward the seat, to clamp and hold the cupholder.

i only had to drill a hole in each brace for the bolts to go through the seat frame at the hog rings. it worked out great. the pic below shows the slot i cut for the braces.

I have that cupholder in my Oldsmobile. Actually, I like it more than the one that was factory in the center console.

and with the cupholder removed.

all in all, i think it turned out ok. in the future, i might apply an upholstered wrap to finish it off. i have about $10 and 30 min. in this

Re: Neat Cupholder Idea for Factory Seat Guys

I've got a split bench and just slipped it in between the two seats. What I really like about it is that there is a cupholder for me AND my wife. This means that I don't accidentally drink her nasty beverage by accident!

It's "The Wedgie". Bad memories.
I went to looking for the wedge and couldn't find anything, but evntually found "The Wedgie"...

If you can't pick it up local - here's a couple of options folks.

Ahhh....the days when a truck was a truck and didn't have cup holders...
nice idea though.

Ever notice the cup holder indents on the back side of the glove box lid? Works great at the Drive-In .....Bad While driving

yeah, i liked that #101 and #102. i thought about building one similar, but i just went ahead with the Wedgie (thanks for the correction) because it's easier to store if the little lady wants to sit in the middle. "it's got a bench seat, baby. you don't have to sit over there!"

Outstanding idea. I like the ability to remove it too, so you could throw it in the dishwasher when you open that coke that spews everywhere too.

And an added bonus, you don't have to use the ashtray for your change too. This way I could turn my ashtray door into a cd carriage....

sweet idea. you can leave your original radio, install a cd drive in the ashtray slot, and be good to go!

I did the ash tray modification. The ash tray holder is pretty cool, but I think I like your idea better. Nice job!

Thanks for the idea. I just finished mine tonight. Haven't had a chance to see how good it works, I'm sure I'll like it. Thanks again, I been needing a cup holder.
