No, you can't use that method! You have to do everything at least twice, there's no getting around it.

Great pictures, fun to look at.

What do the ports on the underside of the manifold look like? That's the part that will sometimes corrode to where you have a hard time getting a good seal.

They look pretty good. I'm going to lightly clean them up to get a better look.

There are shaft bushings you can buy from various sources. You drill out the shaft hole in the baseplate and install the bushings, returning the baseplate to better-than-original tolerances, in some cases. I know Cliff Ruggles sells them:

That's the way I went. Simple, relatively inexpensive, flow tested, and guaranteed. And they have the equipment to do things I would have a hard time doing, like replating worn parts. In my case I went with a carb for a 78 so I could add the electric choke.

I don't know how visible it is in the picture, but the tag on the left side of the carb (in the picture) is a dyno tag. Every one National sells is tested before it leaves their shop.

Do they take your old one as a core? This may be the route I go since I do have shaft play.

Re: Looking at intakes and carbs

There is a core deposit - $50. Mine was junk, but I figured $250 for a completely remanufactured and warranteed Quadrajet is still a really good price.

I took mine to a local carb rebuilder to have the bushings installed. He wasn't happy about just doing the bushings, but finally agreed to do it. I can and have done everything else to my carburetor, and have been rebuilding them on my own vehicles (mostly) since 1969. When I worked as a mechanic, it was just easier to send them to the local rebuilder, though. But for family, it was me for those repairs.
