Re: My 56 Handyman build

Well worse fear came about this week. My friend and body man had cancer last year and the doctors thought they had stopped it. Well his last check up showed the cancer has returned with it spreading. He returned my car to me on Monday. I'm hoping for the best for him.
Now I need to find a shop that does the same quality of work for a honest price. Looks like it the project will be on hold for several months.

Re: My 56 Handyman build

I have contacted 4 shops in the area to finish the metal work and painting.
Starting with the first two shops one couldn't get to it until July 2020. The next one wouldn't take it on as their body man was retiring and they couldn't find anyone who was qualified to do the work to the standards that they demanded.
The next shop estimated 600 hours of work and charged $90.00 per hour. That came out to $54000.00. That's just for 20% of the metal work left and the paint. And couldn't start until the end of Oct. or Nov.
Last one estimated 220 hours of work at $65.00 per hour. And I have seen many of the cars he has restored and modified and the workmanship is as good as the $95.00 per hour shop. He can't start until Oct. I will be going with number 4.

UPDATE: Well the project has come to a screaming halt. The new body shop has notified me that the October 1st date to start has been moved now to December 1st.

Re: My 56 Handyman build

It must be great to be a body shop. Never a care in the world when they get to stuff. OK that's probably not exactly true, but on every vehicle forum it really seems like the norm ... Body and paint prison is a real thing. Or on Dennis's case, they wont even let him in prison =)

Re: My 56 Handyman build

Good luck Dennis, would love to see your wagon finished up!

Side note … My son and his step daughter have made a deep dive into model building. I told him he would flip out if he ever saw your model room. I'm going to have to snag him one afternoon on his way home from work (he lives in Mt Vernon) and meet him at your place so you can do a little showing off haha.

Re: My 56 Handyman build

Got a little bit more done this week. Sanded all of the anti-rust protection off to get the body ready for primer next week. Then more sanding.

Re: My 56 Handyman build

A little more progress this week. Laid down a primer coat to the roof and started to sand it. Found several small dents and a depression the size of a hand.

That depression., is it oil canned or a dent?

It looks like someone was grinding near by and used their left hand to support themselves as it was in the shape of a hand. So I guess it's a dent.

Re: My 56 Handyman build

Should be able to hammer and dolley that out then...you may even be able to bump it back out with your hand....If it was oil canning i was gonna suggest a shrinking disc
MP&C showed how he fixed a almost identical dent in the roof of the wagon hes working on
