transmission leak, A833

I have an A833 OD transmission that has been leaking fluid. I finally had time to look it over and it appears to be coming from the speedometer cable right where the rubber coating starts close to where it attaches to the transmission. I didn't realize that fluid got inside the cable. Will a new cable fix this or is there a seal or O ring where it attaches to the transmission that needs to be replaced? Thanks for any assistance.

LIkely the inner seal on the speedo bullet is shot.
Here's an example of one. Yours may be different looking. THere's an inner oring that wears out. You can get another oring but the bullet doesn.t cost much more.
Try your local auto parts store or tranny shop.

Thanks for the help. O'Reilly's is ordering the O-ring for me. I'll give it a try. Only $.69.

Re: transmission leak, A833

One more rookie question; how do you remove the bullet? I took off the wishbone retainer but it's still pretty solid. Don't want to break something trying to get it out. Thanks again.

Best to google how to remove it.
IIRC you need to turn it to remove it. Can't remember where to though.

Re: transmission leak, A833

Just want to update this for anyone who may be searching in the future. I read another thread on this site where it was stated that the speedometer gear housing is the same as a th350. It looks the same and maybe the whole thing can be interchanged but the A833 transmission does not have the bullet insert like the 350. It's all one aluminum casting. Once it's loosened up it's easy to remove. After the wishbone clip is removed all that's holding it in is an O-ring. The seal on the inside is easy to replace and it is the same as a th350. There's a small wire retaining ring holding the seal in place. It's easily removed with a small screwdriver or knife blade; there's no groove for it. Now that I know how to do it the whole job can be done in a few minutes. Of course, this first time took longer. Thanks for all the help.
