On the side.....

No Im not talking about a truck on its side. I was wandering what you all do on the side for extra cash... No I dont work for the IRS. I used to do a lot of automotive side jobs( engine builds, swaps, lift kits, gears) but out here I dont have the same conections I used to in the bayarea so I am looking for new Ideas. I was thinking about maby seeing if I can haul trailers for some of the 1000s of trailed dealers that are out here, or maybe auto repo? I dont know, just looking for Ideas and maybe some info on how you started out.
Plus it might be fun to see what others are doing. Unless your a male stripper, if thats the case then KEEP IT TO YOUR SELF

Re: On the side.....

I wire garages, weld, gas fitting, and find parts and vehicles for people on the side. I do bodywork, engine building, trannys and hot rods full time.

I wire garages, gas fitting, and build hotrods. Perhaps building maintanence would work for you ( replacing lights, painting, general repairs for local busineses or neighbors.

Dont let the mrs find out you want to get some on the side. If she does, you'll have to find a part time job to afford the aforementioned...

Re: On the side.....

I used to do trick custom powdercoating, but it took too much time and paid way too little. Then the shop I was using got sold, so I lost interest. A friend of mine set up the equipment in his garage, but it's not quite the same. I might get back into it because nobody does the kind of work I did.

I still have a bunch of custom colors, metal flakes, clears and candies, but it's a pain not having my own shop.

I would like to become welding certified so I could build and shoot custom stuff too.

Re: On the side.....

I have been doing vehicle and sign graphics and lettering on the side for 6 years but have 27 years experience at it. Have an older vinyl cutting system to make decals. Letter a lot of racecars and commercial vans and trucks. Of course back when I first started this job, there was no computer sign making, it was just a can-a-paint and a brush.
After I pay my heat and electricity bills for the shop, I can put the rest into my trucks, if some home disaster like a broken sewer line (happened just before Christmas) dont suck the xtra bucks up first. If you take on more work, its less time to work on the trucks, and quite often the time is even more important than the money.
Can be kind of a catch 22.

Later---DAC

Re: On the side.....

I do bodywork and paint. I have been doing this since high school. (18 years). I worked in the auto body business for 4 years out of high school. I really enjoyed the work, I just had to drive way too far (1 hour each way) to get in an area where I could make some money at it.............Jerry

Re: On the side.....

I give up my side job about 3 years ago when it became more work than my regular job. I never had time to do anything but work, now I just save up a few bucks here and there until I get enough to do what I want on the truck. Its alot less stressful on me and the wife and kids.

Re: On the side.....

Given That my regular job gives me 5 days a week off (Houston Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedic) I started a Window Blind and Shutter business. Seems to be doing pretty good.

I work on PCs for a limited group of people and do some drafting and plumbing design for truck parts money. Works out great.

Re: On the side.....

I do some general truck repair and some welding/fab work for 4-wheel drive stuff. I also do some body and sheetmetal work and when I am feeling really ambitious, I take on complete paint jobs...

Re: On the side.....

There is quite a lot of diversity on this site, I guess thats what makes it so great. I recently put an add on craigs list to see if I could drum up some more side work. I am looking for Lift kit installs, gear installs. Solid axle swaps, and fab work. I might start doing work on these old trucks as well, I like working on mine so much,I may as well get paid for it

Re: On the side.....

i started a network consulting business on the side late last year. i specialize in Linux/UNIX/OpenSource operating systems, and advanced networking/firewalls/routers and VPNs. my main targets are small businesses that dont have (or dont have much) computer technology, but are primed and ripe for the advantages that having their own systems will bring.

I teach drawing classes at a local junior college. Keeps me in some extra cash, and I get to hang out cool people and talk art. I've just started to sell my art, but that is a slow start. You are all welcome to stop by my online shop and look at some of my most recent work.

Re: On the side.....

I do computer builds, repairs, and consulting as well as network support. Mostly to some small businesses, churches and select individuals. I slowed down some as it was becoming over bearing and stealing too much of my family and free time.

Re: On the side.....

The issue I had was my day job pays $40 an hour and the average coating job was $120-$150, but it ended up taking an average of 4 to 5 hours a job. So after raw materials, shop expenses, and energy, it worked out to be about $25 an hour. That doesn't include the time away from my wife and daughter. It was only about one night a week, but it made for a long night.

I was also in the Navy Reserve, then the National Guard and drill pay was truck $$. But the National Guard isn't as side-jobish as it used to be

Well I used to part out 67-72 trucks, kept me out of trouble and made some extra cash. I also seed yards in fall and spring to get some more extra $$$.
