Axle mods while out

I am in the process of changing my rear axle bearings and seals. While I have the axles out is there any modifications recommended before re-installing them? I want to keep the 6 lug axles and I am in the process of pricing Torque Thrust ST's. Is the bore size an issue on the rear centering ring?

Re: Axle mods while out

Defiantly do a posi or limited slip! Also a new ring and pinon gear. That is what I did when I rebuilt my rear axle.

Re: Axle mods while out

Limited slip = Posi-traction

An Eaton Posi-traction unit will be the best $400 bucks you can spend on your truck.

Re: Axle mods while out

I thought Posi-traction and a limited slip are different! Where a posi has issues when you make turns but a limited slip corrects that issue by allowing the inside wheel to slip when turning.

Re: Axle mods while out

Limited slip is locked like a full posi unit, until you turn and then internal clutch pack will let one axle slow or speed up with the turn or terrain undulation. Nothing like hearing a full posi "POP" while turning or backing. it will sound like you just blew your rear end.

Re: Axle mods while out

Limited Slip diffs by different names... all the same thing.

Chevrolet = Posi-traction
Buick = Positive Traction
Olds = Anti-spin
Cadillac = Controlled Traction
Pontiac = Safe-T-Track
Ford = Traction Lock
Chrysler = Sure Grip
AMC = Twin-Grip

Re: Axle mods while out

An Eaton posi / limited slip has clutches that slip for cornering. A locker has no slippage and will chirp tires on corners.

Re: Axle mods while out

Assuming you have a stock cover, I would add a drain plug bung while you have a it off.
