Trans cooler with A N fittings

I'm looking for a tran cooler about 9" x 12" give or take with A.N. fittings. Have any of you guys bought a good one you recommend?

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

I used this one from summit racing, I mounted it under the truck. I've put about 1500 miles on it so far and no problems.

I bought one from jegs for my 3100 and plumbed it inline with the cooler in the radiator. I got all the braided hose and an stuff from jegs as well. Give me a day or two and I'll see if I can find exactly what I've got.(it's been three years since I put it all together)

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

This is what I have. Paired with a RnD radiator and a 700R4. Have not finished putting it together, but the specs all work together.

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

I always like to bring this up because I never know what the right answer is, and haven't heard a compelling argument either way yet:

Assuming you run the aux and the radiator trans coolers in line, then:

- If you put the aux cooler before the rad's cooler then you dump less heat into the coolant and you get the 'bonus' of the engine warming the trans up more quickly in cold weather. Also the temp delta between the hot trans fluid and the airflow is greater so it should shed more heat at that stage of the process.

- If you put the aux cooler after the rad's cooler, maybe you get better cooling, I don't know. This seems to be the norm.

I did the former.

That is a good question and I am interested in opinions. I think where you live has a lot to do with it as well. Ambient temp and all.

I think a search of the "data base" should come up with lots of ideas.

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

I have heard good transmission guys indicate heat in a transmission is a bad thing. I think the quote was "Stop putting heat in my transmission." He suggested running the remote cooler without running through the radiator.

I have no real knowledge, just remember the guy had a reputation of being one of the best in town.

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

Heat is bad for the transmission fluid. It loses it's lubrication properties near 300 degrees. In a modern overdrive transmission this could happen in the torque converter if it remains unlocked for too long under load.

Today they engineer the trans fluid to go to the radiator cooler first. It helps bring the engine coolant up to temp more quickly for emission compliance. The in radiator "liquid to liquid" is highly efficient. If an external "air to liquid" cooler is installed it's after the radiator so the trans fluid can be cooled even further.

Re: Trans cooler with A N fittings

I run this B&M unit in pretty much every rig I ever build. Works for trans or oil if you want to run two of them.

I even used one in my old auto cross car as a power steering cooler. 315/35-17's on the front put one heck of a load on the power steering system.

The 1/2-NPT ports let you run whatever line fitting into them that you desire.
