Re: Taking the leap to build

Well I as able to get back in the shop and work on the truck a little yesterday. Got the drivers side bed blocked again and it looks pretty good. Should be able to finish up the drivers side next week.

Re: Taking the leap to build

I also got the first round of blocking done on the passengers side done. Considering the amount of damage and work I had to do on this side it looks good to me. A little more work and this side will be done soon. I got the outside of the tailgate stripped and all the dents, waves and spot welds smoothed out also.

I have never painted anything, I have color sanded and buffed a lot of things tho. The work I do on my truck is a way for me to relieve stress, as funny as that may sound. I go to the shop on my days off and work till I feel like stopping. Thanks for the compliment on the work.

Re: Taking the leap to build

I got the bed ready for some color and started on the front fenders. Stripped the front fenders to bare metal and sprayed some sealer on them until I can start smoothing them out next week. They look ok but the passenger side has some waves in them that will take a little time to get out. After I get the outside of the fenders looking good its on to the hood and doors. Getting closer to taking it apart and not being able to drive it till it gets some color on it.

Nothing wrong with that! That's kinda how I keep myself sane. Nothing better then turning some wrenches and doing some tinkering.

Re: Taking the leap to build

Well I got some work done on the truck today. I think I found the reason for the front fenders not lining up. I was changing the radiator support bushings to help get everything lined up and this is what I found. Not only are they worn smooth out but it looks like sometime during its life someone put 67-68 bushings on it.

Re: Taking the leap to build

After getting the new bushings in I got the fenders back on and they lined up really well. I blocked the fenders and got them in the final coat of primer. Hopefully next week I can get the hood done and then the front end will be ready for paint and its on to the cab.

Re: Taking the leap to build

Ok I have a question and I know someone out there will have the answer. My hood hinges are bad and I was going to have them rebuilt, however I do not know if they are originals or aftermarket. I know the aftermarket hinges are not the same and have heard they will not last very long. How can I tell if my hinges are original GM or aftermarket. If they are aftermarket I dont want to spend the cash getting them rebuilt.

What would be your cost rebuild vs new? If all the hinges are tight and theres no slop, it might just be a change out of springs. I had the whole driverside bedside from front to rear smeared with 1/2 of bondo. So your 2x2 fix was impressive to me. I just changed the whole bedside. Keep up the great work.
