Sbc build for daily driver
I'm wanting to build a 350 or 383 for my 69 c10.
It's a 60 mile round trip to work, so I would li,e decent mileage. I have a 31-10.50 rear tire with 3.08 gears. Th400 tranny. Headers and dual exhaust. My heads are rebuilt iron heads with 2.02, 1.88 valves 65cc chambers. I have a 4bolt main block from the mid 70s to use for this build. I would like to use everything I have listed if possible. I would like to get some power out of it but still get decent mileage. Any suggestions on a build? Thanks Also have a comp extreme energy flat tapped cam, 212-218 @50 447-454 lift. Not sure if I should use this or not? Last edited by Sawlog; 06-25-2018 at 06:35 AM. |

The first question I have is how did you put big block exhaust valves in a small block head? Next question is what is the budget for the engine build? If mpg's is a concern I would stay with a 350. With those heads you will likely want a piston with a slight dish to keep the compression down to 87 octane pump gas levels.

What kind of mpg are you looking for, because for a small block with a turbo 400 in a 50 year old truck....12-.15 would be impressive to me. Especially since my newer fuel injected Silverado with a v/6 is getting low 20's

With a stock 350 and automatic trans, these trucks were good for 10-12 MPG when they were new. You could add fuel injection and an overdrive , and might be able to bump it up to 14-16. Remember that you're dealing with 50 year old technology and the aerodynamics of a storage container. You can make a lot of horsepower with a 350, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of fuel economy.

Save your money, start gathering the parts and do a 4.8/4l60e.
Mine gets about 19-20mpg highway on a regular basis.

With a 1500 dollar budget I think 11 to 12 is being more realistic and that would require a light foot. Have you considered the option of buying an econobox car. For instance, my wife has a 2001 Altima with nearly 200,000 miles on it and we use it all the time. It still runs great, the a/c blows cold, the gas mileage is superb, and it's a breeze to parallel park in a small spot. Granted we paid a bit for it many years back, but it's probably a clean $2500 car today. That might allow you more flexibility when you build your truck.

Re: Sbc build for daily driver
Maybe buy a crate engine from Jegs/summit....I believe they sell a 350 cheap with low HP.... 1500 bucks would be in the range of these engines I believe. Plus they provide some sort of a warranty....
I am sure there has been many debates on this forum regarding cheap builds, crate engines, build your own engines etc etc etc....... I am assuming this 69 c10 does not have an engine in it today correct ? If you did you most likely could build it or run it as is and install a overdrive trans with your 1500 bucks.... A 69 c10 is not in the discussion on gas mileage...... GOOD LUCK... |

With that trans./axle/tire combo you're going to be turning 2,000 RPM @ 60 MPH, so to have an engine that gets good mileage running at that RPM range most of the time it may not have a lot of seat-of-the-pants power in the upper end. Not that that's a bad thing, you just may not be able to have your cake and eat it too. The L31 Vortec crate engine may be a good choice - even from the factory (albeit in fuel injected form) they have enough mid-range power to move a truck along well while getting 20+ MPG in some cases.
Off the top of my head, if tuned well I'd think a Quadrajet and Edelbrock Performer? dual-plane intake would be a cheap and effective combo for pulling good mileage out of a stock L31.
