Help! Suburban body panel flatness!

Can someone please check the rear quarter panel flatness for me? I'm doing body work and can't determine if the rear quarter over the wheel well is perfectly flat or not. In the pictures I have a 6' aluminum ruler placed along the quarter. On the blue tape I've marked 1" increments from the edge of the wheel well. I'm holding the ruler at the 6" mark. When I do this the ends of the ruler are about 1/8" away from the body panels. This leads me to believe that there is a slight curve to the body panel. It is slightly bowed out right above the wheel well center line.

Thanks

Paul

Re: Help! Suburban body panel flatness!

This can probably be checked with a piece of string and two people if you don’t want to lay a ruler along the side of your truck. Just hold it about 5” - 6” above the edge of the wheel well.

This body work is killing me!

Thanks in advance

Paul

Re: Help! Suburban body panel flatness!

I don't have a burb handy, but is it the same on both sides of the burb? To me that would tell me one way or another. What would be the chance of each side of the burb having the exact same damage? But being exactly (or super close) the same as you're measuring on both sides would indicate that is the way it is supposed to be.

Course I'm just a dork sitting 3000 miles away from your burb that is having trouble sleeping so when I read this later I may have a different point of view =)

While I can stand up this morning, i went over to the original paint one i have sitting here and at no point will my 6' straight edge sit flat. The closer you get to the wheel arch the bigger the end gaps so I would say it safe to say the panels are not flat.

If you could confirm Richard’s observations I’d really appreciate it!

Re: Help! Suburban body panel flatness!

here's a couple for what it's worth with a straight enough edge 4' piece of 1" al angle..

blue is 72 k1500 original body and paint..

primer is 71 k20 original body sanded in rusty primer

both fairly flat front edge of door jamb to about 3' back and starts to taper in towards the rear lamps..

my layman opinion it's fairly straight and flat along the sides fairing even with the doors and narrowing down slightly toward the rear..

ignore the troll in the back of the blue one

hope that helps and good luck!
