Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Just for fun check to see if you find any Blazers with a build sequence starting with a 8. Line 2 builds started with 6 and line 1 builds started with 8. (1971 Flint) I'm curious to see if all the Flint blazers were built on line 2 or both lines. I don't have any blazer SPIDs 1971 Flint that the sequence number starts with 8, but you might.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

I'm relying on those examples documented on the Blazer SPID thread. All of the 71 MY Flint built examples begin with 6 - there are no 8s to date.

I'll check the thread for Jimmy SPIDs and will post back if there are any Flint examples from 71.

Blazers were built on Flint Line 2 only.

Line 1 was specific to pickups.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Recently picked up a 1969 GMC K2500 and i was wondering what the X in the VIN stands for? On the VIN decoder it says that space should be a dash or a special designation. Thanks for the help!

Jay, Does the VIN on the door jam(metal plate) have the X?

The VIN tag on the cab has the dash. The X must have been a default letter for the dash in the printing system.

Jay, So your vin does not have a special destination code, as the VIN plate is the definitive answer. The X on your SPID is unusual and most likely a assembly line mistake. The VINs on the SPID, were printed at a different time from the printing on the rest of the SPID. So who ever printed the VIN on your SPID put a X where a space should have been. I don't know why or how but it's a mistake. Other 1969 GMC SPIDS from St. Louis got it right.(space, no X) Kind of a cool anominaly that makes no difference at all. And it took 50 years for someone to catch the mistake.

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Hi. I bought a short bed chassis for my project. I want to see if it’s possible to decode it? Like what year it is etc. The number stamped on the chassis on the driver side is 2z130693. Any help is greatly appreciated.

72 Fremont built truck - the last 6 digits would match the last 6 digits of the VIN of the cab plate that was previously on the chassis. If original, it should have front disk brakes.

Thanks! Yes original front disk brakes. The rear suspension is leaf spring. I bought the chassis for my 70 cab. It was as my dad’s truck.

Bringing this original thread back up because it is still relevant and a HUGE help today Paul and Bruce! You are a god damn beauties. Thanks for doing this. Any idea why my my serial number portion of my Canadian GMC 71 starts at 20,000 instead of 10,000 - KS104-11 20539

Re: GMC and Chevrolet VIN and Model Number Decoders with pics.

Ryanz, Yes, because it rolled over after 10,000 trucks were built(for the USA market). Your truck was 10,539 to be assigned a vin number in 1971 at Oshawa for the American market. GMC's built at Oshawa for the Canadian market used the Chevrolet VIN format and used a 9 between the Chassis and Engine codes to denote GMC. They also used 100,001 as a starting number.
But because your truck was going to the USA, it uses the USA GMC format which has a starting number of 10,001. That's 10,001 with the first truck. So 20,539 - 10,000 is 10,539. Thanks for the kind words, Bruce

Hey Bruce - thanks for this. Somehow I'm having a hard time following. If there were less than 1500 made of these stepside Chev 4x4's in 71 in the US - how is it possible it's number 10539? Or are you just saying GMC's in general? Not 4x4 Fendersides.

Yes GMC's in general. As far as the serial number is concerned they don't care what type of truck, just if it's a light duty truck or not. 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton, fender side or wide side, v8 or six cylinder. They don't care when issuing the serial number. If it's a light duty truck it gets the next number in the sequence.

Gotcha! I’m going to pay the fee to find out more about mine specifically, and how maybe short box 4x4 fenderside GMC’s were made in Canada in 71. That has to be worth something no?

Yes, Info on the trucks built in Canada can be purchased still. But I doubt it will tell you production numbers. Mostly just how the truck was optioned.
Do you have the sticker on the inside of the glove box door? It will have the options on it.

Yes - attached. What I’m most interested in finding out is how many of these GMC’s were made in a short box 4x4 GMC in Canada. Has to be very minimal.

Chevrolet and GMC medium and heavy duty trucks, I picked up a 1970 Chevrolet C50 and looking at what I think is a 1973 gmc 5500. Can you decipher the vin#?
