Re: Tail light fuel filler

That looks like it's going to be real clean when finished up. How do you make it open? Are you able to pull down from the top or do you push it in at the bottom? Any particular reason that exhaust tubing was used instead of fuel line (aside from that size of rubber tubing not being easily available everywhere)?

Rubber filler hose would have been better than steel, it was just easier to get the bend that I wanted using steel verses seaching the wrecking yards for the right size/bend. As far as I know, no aftermarket company makes it pre bent, but I haven't researched it. If I find some, I may change it, but would still have to piece it together to get it to the tank. The easiest way to open it is to push on the bottom. At first I was planning to use a magnetic cabinet door latch to hold it closed, but I liked the spring better. Right now I don't think it has enough tension holding it closed, and I'm thinking about raising the point where the spring attaches to the light housing to give it more leverage.

That looks great, very clean work, I might just copy your idea when I do mine, it would be really cool if you could rig up a remote control to open the light, that's what I'm planning for mine.

With some application of thought, one could add a linear actuator and open it electrically. They come in all sizes and lengths.

Hey Bill! No, I just took these pics last night. I plan to put it on to test fit a few things this weekend though. I'm just happy to get some time to work on it.

Yep, you are correct, it's not just something you can run in to your local Napa or Auto Zone and pick up. I was able to source some here locally when I put a tank under the bed of a 66 I used to have.

Bring 'em on over, it's always easier the second time around! The blazer may take a few days, and umm, I'll need the keys to make sure that it "works right".

Thanks! The tank will be inside the frame rails, behind the rearend. I have a blazer tank from American classic truck parts that I was planning to use, but because it hangs so low, and the filler neck is not in the best location, I am thinking about getting one of Fuelcellguy's custom tanks. I listed the parts in a previous post, on page one.

Just thought I'd post pics of it finished. It works great, but does burp some out when it gets full.

From the pic it is hard for me to tell. Did you have to actually widen the stake pocket to get the hose in there?

No I didn't have to widen anything, just remove the two lips from the bedside, on each side of the tail light opening, behind the bulb housing, and also had to cut a opening behind the tail light to make room for the filler and hose.

Re: Tail light fuel filler

Nice work - very clean! At the moment, I'm contemplating the same type of filler mod. Torn between bed and taillight fill. I noticed what I thought was a tank vent hose in one of your pics under the bed. Where did you vent it? I looked at the marine filler and didn't see a vent. Also, did you run into any problems with the mechanical fuel pump after relocating the tank?
