Re: project what about...

Not much progress. But I did get some help over to get the top on. New sheet metal arrives tomorrow so I figured I would get the top squared away before attacking the next part

Re: project what about...

Well the sheet metal showed up today. I’m excited yet hesitant to get started. Not exactly sure which order to go in. Kick panel, A pillar B pillar rocker or reverse.

Re: project what about...

Kick panel, A pillar, B pillar, then rocker is the right order. This assumes no floor or cab support issues.

Good luck, Rg

I agree with RJ, but would assemble the front clip before final welding. Makes sure your gaps are good

Re: project what about...

Thanks for the replies! I figured I would have to put the door on and check for gaps. Didn’t even think about the front fender. No matter how much you read, it seems different when you get into it. Like everything in life. Second time around will be easier! Lol

Re: project what about...

I’m in the process of fitting the kick panel. When removing the old rusty parts, there was some seam filler in where the bottom meets the floor and between where it is spot welded. Do we put seam sealer between the kick panel and floor and then spot weld, or seam seal after?

Re: project what about...

I did it after because I couldn't think of a way to weld through it.

Re: project what about...

So trying to fit the inner rocker plate. I can’t remeber how the four bolts on the A pillar go. I believe the back two come from behind and the front two go in like the picture. Then i remeber the plate would spot weld to the rocker box. But the way this fits, there is an indention that keeps the two pieces separate. Which to me seems to make sense so that water can get out. But not sure if I should trim the indention to make it flush

Re: project what about...

Ok so some progress this weekend;however I may need to start over on the a pillar patch. Seriously you guys make this look easy. When trimming my patch, the front side matches up decent enough. But when I get to the rear side it doesn’t match at all. The biggest part is the curve on original to the curve on the patch. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: project what about...

I could be wrong, been years, but if you make a straight cut below the hinge bolt and make a pie cut in the upper post you may be able to work it in. I'll have to look at my pics. Or it could be the quality of your part, can you check dimensions

Looks like page 3, post 71

Disregard pie cut comment add photo

Re: project what about...

Thanks Jim! I have read your build many times and everytime I find something new. I knew I might be in trouble with the zig zag cuts, but I was chasing rust without cutting out the hinge holes. But I may order a new piece from a different vender and see if that helps. That piece just doesn’t seem wide enough.

Re: project what about...

I preferr to use a flange and clecos, and just cut corners and allignment will come out correct

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2bQvxoT]20181008_112821

good choice to stay away from the plate, but just add some of your patch panel to get you back on a straight cut, I think most of my metal was top banana, but I'm hearing AMD might be good as well. Thickness of the metal is key, How's your welding skills?

Make sure the bottom fender bolt line up correctly

Re: project what about...

Not to scare ya, but wait till you try to fix B pillar, there's like 6 pieces of sheet metal that fits in there, learn well on A post...lol

I put dum dum on after all the final welds, but there was a weldable seam sealer done at the factory. Wish someone from GM would give up the product name

Re: project what about...

Thanks! I don’t know why I didn’t think of building it back up to a straight cut. That seems way easier than perfectly fiting the entire patch with zig zag cuts.

Yeah b pillar isn’t looking fun either. My biggest problem is I get a couple of hours to work on it. Then I look at it for 1 1/2 hours. Finally get courage to cut into it and wonder why I cut it like that. Lol. Oh well. Learning lots. And so far I haven’t cut into anything that I can’t fix.

Re: project what about...

ok...if you are going to fix the rust - you should be looking a few steps ahead for what to look for or consider as you dig in. I combed through several build posts to see what to look for and to gather tips/advice from others who were going through the same repairs.

I found several times where I thought I was nearing the end and then had to order parts and wait (up to a few weeks) for the parts to arrive to get back to it. That was good every now and again just to break up the work into smaller chunks.

I flipped your pix so we can see the angle/view you are referencing. As noted the A pillar and the kick panel are the easier parts of the truck to fix...the B-pillar will need a coordinated effort where the sheet metal comes together as you lay on the ground trying to cut/bend/remove the rusty metal.

Have a look at my build post on an older project I did - a few pages in I started to document my progress with the rust repair.

Thanks lks_dcvm I have read your build a few times also. You can read so many build threads that you forget where certain points are, and I appreciate you guys chiming in and helping.

Well, seems like you are doing it the same way I did, looking at it for an hour and a half

But, you may be able to rock the patch back or forth to extend the part that is short. Just don't go to far as the fender bolt won't line up, easier to do with a straight cut

Make your cuts in the patch, as you can always buy another, in my thread there was a comment where I went thru several before I was happy with the out come

Re: project what about...

Not much progress. Finally got rid of the show steers the end of September and I thought I may have time in October to work on the blazer. But not much time after trying to catch up on all the other honey do’s. I have been slowly fiting the pieces together and have almost got it to where it fits correctly.

Re: project what about...

Progress being made = good. Keep the pics coming so we can assist as needed.

Even if you are reviewing other build threads you may get ideas or see a new way to do this stuff. Research is still part of the restoration on these trucks.

Nice job so far!

Looks great! I'd bolt the door and fender on to check alignment (I've had mine off and on about 10 times...)

Good luck, Rg

- this will also prevent getting too far and having to backtrack.

Quick question - as I just reviewed your build thread. Did you replace the body mounts and check/shim by chance to make sure the doors opened/closed as they should?
