73-87 bedwood for SB fleetsides

Is there a way to install bedwood on a shorted fleetside, installing it on the bed frame not on top of the sheetmetal?

Re: 73-87 bedwood for SB fleetsides

I am going to do a wood bed floor. I build a raised frame to put it on (I removed the floor to clear the frame and suspension).

Ray McAvoy restored an E81 fleetside. Gorgeous work too. GM painted the wood. Looks better varnished...

You can find a early bed which had wood as a option,Or spend a lot of time cutting and fabbing.

Short bed fleetsides were never offered with a wood floor.

Re: 73-87 bedwood for SB fleetsides

E81 is the RPO for the 73-80 wood bed fleetsides. It was not available after 1980.

The short and long fleetside 67-72 could be optioned with wood floors.

You'll need the E81 rear crosspiece, cross sills, and the flange pieces around the other three sides.
Mar-K sells the bed wood but nobody repops the sheet metal right now.

Ray Mcavoy replaced the bed wood in his grandfathers' E81 optioned truck.
I believe he modified 67-72 crosspieces and rear sill. I can't find the thread he posted about the process.

Thanks hatzie! Yes, we were able to modify 67-72 crosspieces. We didn't make any attempt at trying to use a 67-72 rear sill though, instead choosing to have a local shop fabricate one along with the flange pieces.

A few years ago, a member of this site contacted me via PM after seeing the tread I posted on Grampa's truck. A friend of his was restoring a truck with an E81 wood bed and needed some additional info/photos to help recreate some of his pieces that were completely rusted away. I was just talking with him again on the phone a couple months ago and he mentioned having shipped his old rear cross sill to Mar-K so they could use it as a template. So it sounds like Mar-K may soon be adding 73-80 E81 rear cross sills to their list of offerings.

That was smart of them (both).
