Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Another one needing to see what the correct bolt and nut setup looks like. Mine has the one installed at the factory with the factory orange paint on everything. Before I put the tank in the front of the cab I used it all the time and just used an old spare tire mount hook bolt that was in the trunk of one of the cars I scrapped out. When I put the tank under the bed I'll put the spare back in that mount.

Here is a pic of a selection from the Parts Catalog that I got from another thread. Also, a couple pics of my NOS carriage bolt

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Wow Cericd, those photos are amazing.. bet there aren't too many of those OEM in-bed spare tire mounting bolts floating around at the dealers around the whole USA - especially with the GM part number sticker still on them.. very helpful though.. I might be able to find an equivalent at Fastenal now that I've seen that - for ten times the price..

Just a statement in general and on a related topic regarding these spare carriers - I do think there are two improvements needed: 1.) Locking feature - because even stock steelies are hard to find these days and if you have a brand new $125 balanced tire on your recently powdercoated spare steel wheel you don't wanna just go off and leave it sitting there in the bed tempting people.

2.) A quick release - to pop that spare off and on for cleaning or for loading large items in the bed.

Earlier in this thread, I believe, 71CHEVYSHORTBED402 said that the bolt I have pictured above is not the correct bolt for a 1970 C/10 fleetside with the in-bed mounted spare. Am I reading the parts manual wrong or is it just because my bolt is threaded farther up the shaft of the bolt? I was pretty sure this one was correct. If not, what is the part number for the correct bolt?

I may have misspoke or was confused. Somewhere in this thread SSTim identified the correct bolts. That looks like one of them.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Sorry to bring back an old thread. Just wanted to say how happy I am I found this post. My newly acquired truck had been converted to propane at one time then converted back to gas. It had big steel hoops mounted in the bed. Just last night I got the hoops out (with some choice words in the process). I saw the strange mount on the inside of the bed near where the hoops were. I assumed it was some bracket having to do with the propane stuff. I had planned to remove it (probably cutting some bolts) but I got tired last night and decided to save the removal for another day. Today I found this thread and realized what the mount is. It is staying and will be put to use once I get a carriage bolt etc.

Haha, just realized after looking at my own pics, the carriage bolt is in the first pic. That means I have the carriage bolt sitting in a box.

Yep, looks like more "RBM" type front panel bolts. Is the p13 on your SPID?

I haven't been able to find the correct nuts for the bolt or the mounting screws.

I was thinking about using some sort of locking lug nut when I install mine.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

That's similar the one in the illustration. And bonus too, you helped locate another bolt for 67-72. That is, it's the right bolt for a carrier type for 67-72. This is the 399714. I found the part days ago, but the number doesn't come up on wiki for 71-72 on search, so wasn't able to confirm. Does anyone know if this nut and bolt is for the carrier on topic, and if so, how does it work?

If you look above on the parts clip, that part number is used on the Suburban which used an inside mounted spare. It was also apparently used on Blazers. They had several different mounts including screwing it flat to the floor! As far as I know that wing nut/bolt has no place on a fleetside P13 carrier.

Re: Anyone have this original in-bed spare tire carrier mounted?

Good, Glad to see my hardware chart clip made it here as it supports what I said about the carriage bolt. Being a pretty typical hardware store staple it should be easy to find one.

There are a number of questions running through the thread so I am just going to hit what I can without a lot of quotes.

The spare rests on the floor, the illustration could be clearer in that regard. But the floor in fact is the primary load bearer. The simple fact the tire retention bolt slides freely in the slot should make that plain.

The carrier mounts as shown in the drawing. Tucking under the upper lip, the lower end swoops outboard (away from the centerline) to pickup the fastener line along the edge of the bed floor.

Since the wheel is retained with a lug nut, the provided wrench is all you need to tighten or loosen the wheel for installation or removal. The second back up nut... see post #71.

If you want to lock it, you have two period options. A keyed spare tire lock with a special nut you tightened then a cover f keylocked to, to prevent theft. They were once common as dirt but I am sure years of neglect and lost keys have seriously reduced their number.
The other of course is a chain (or cable) through the center hole around the carrier and one half of the wheel tire assembly. You could even do a full turn around the carrier if you wish.

Since peple seem really hung up on hardware just use what you can and keep looking. Like I said above a hardware store carriage bolt and a lug nut will get you started.

Thanks for the additional info Tim. I should have known I saved that pic from one of your posts. You're always quick to respond with great info on the specifics of these trucks.

Not to hijack, but does anyone have pics of their truck with the spare tire mounted in the bed using one of these?

I would add a thick washer between the back up nut and the wheel to reduce point bending loads on the wheel. No point in messing up a wheel.
