I cut the fronts and backs, the back i just cut the first big coil facing me which was about a coil and a half and for the fronts i cut off a coil and half off the bottom this took me no time to do and was FREE!
She looks way lower in person drive great feels better in fact
It could go lower but I'm happy with it for now...
Also got a lil pinstripe done and put on a cherry bomb plus lil peep mirrors...

How did you cut the rear? You didn't cut the pigtail did you?

looks great with that stance! love our longbed fleets. bet you get lots of comments on cutting the rears. out of curiousity: which end of the rear spring is still attached to the truck?

Re: Lowered the 65 The Free Way

lol ya I figured you guys would ask Ive cut lots of pigtails on sedans and if you think about it sedans come only with a cup on bottom and that's it nothing holding the spring in but weight......
So i cut and always cut the top and i left the bottom bolted on...

Lift up the rear end stick jack stands under the frame drop the rear end and with my angle grinder i cut the first big spring facing me right in the middle then took my hammer and tie-rod splitter and hammered at the top spring between the frame a few hits until i seen part of the bolt and cut it with my saw-saw lift the rear end pull out the stands bam u got a good free drop.

If you want i can show you pics of what i cut and what it looks like when the truck is down ...
The spring aint gonna go anywhere trust me.
When i started to lower it i took off the bottom bolt on one side and it broke off so after i lowered this truck i drove it around a few times even went to the river side truck show with nothing holding that spring on but weight and when i lifted it up to put a new bolt and nut on it didn't move a hair from it spot....
So there not gonna move on ya.....

Re: Lowered the 65 The Free Way

It's no big deal in cutting the pigtails off....I done many in sedans as well. However in cars, there a large pocket to keep the spring in "check"

On out trucks, you need to make sure the cut end still contacts the frame.

Re: Lowered the 65 The Free Way

Thanks for the comments guys it means allot to me!
And as far as the rear springs they are even sitting on the frame with lots of play which is a good ride for sure.
Thanks on the color combo i was mostly pushed for black as it hides rust a lil better and was trying to be different on the paint and wheels color but was so easy to go towards red wheels and black paint when i was paint shopping plus i know it looks good plus ya you see it allot on line but really never see it in person driving down the road.
I like it...I may lower it another half coil off the front but I'm not sure it might be bouncy then....But it sure will look good lol

Sweet Truck! (gotta love free lowering job)

Also love the color combo...The black looks sharp and old school cool..I'll be painting mine flat or satin black in about a month or two when i get to the body. I like the red wheels but i dont think i could bring myself to paint my rallies. LOL

Jory

Note:whitewalls are also AWESOME...thats what i run on my bike...Black walls are for sissies. HAHA

Truck looks good. But with Jeep coils so cheap/free why take a risk?

You don't see many people these days who want to disable the few safety features the 60's had. The era of few seat belts, gas tanks in the passenger compartment and single master cylinders, but they still chose to secure the rear springs with two bolts each. Do you really want to trust your safety to one 40 year old bolt in each side?
Trash them and go with the Jeep coils. It's $25 well spent.

Re: Lowered the 65 The Free Way

Bolts are changed to grade 8 and where do you get 25.00 jeep coils?
Your local yard?
If so ill have to check my local junk yards and see what they charge... will it be lower than what it is now with the jeep coils???

I've heard this jeep spring deal talked about here and there and the question arises where might i find these "cheap/fee" jeep springs?

Used springs are not "hot items" at junk yards. There's as many people looking for used springs as those looking for used spark plugs. And, they don't have to be Jeep. I used 70 Chevelle springs (free) in my 63. I'd say any mid-size GM car with rear coils will work.
Check around with any of your car-guy buddies, see what they have.
Good luck, and happy hunting.

Re: Lowered the 65 The Free Way

Offroad and 4x4 shops are the best places to get the Jeep springs. They get them from doing lifts on Jeeps and usually toss them because they end up with so many. I've heard of guys getting them for free as they're relatively worthless. I paid $25 for some a while back from my local 4x4 shop. At a junkyard, you'll have to remove them yourself. No big deal, but why go to the trouble if the offroad shop has them laying around already out.

With them being so cheap, I'd swap out your cut coils for some for sure. What happens if you hit a big bump and those springs of yours no longer remain seated? There's nothing keeping them in place except the truck's weight. It just seems too much like tempting fate to me.
