Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Well today saw some progress. I picked up the transmission, 2WD Explorer
we dont see to much of that up in the PNW.
Spent 4 hours getting the V6 ready to pull and its still not ready but it is very close. Hope to have it out tomorrow.
Not real familiar with these new fangled machines. The 49 GMC is lots more fun to work on.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Another 2 hours and its out. Back in the day Me and a friend had the 350 out of his 69 Vette in 20 minutes. Ah the simpler life.
Some clean up and some hammering and it will be time to start putting in the 5.0

The V6 I pulled is called a PVR or is it PRV, who cares it sucks. Ugly little thing. Same basic engine in the Deloreon.(sp) P.O.C. !

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

My friend drove an '82 baby blue 4 door back in highschool (around 97/98.) It was SUPER CLEAN for a New York car. It had zero rust. He drove it for about 5 years before he ran a stop sign and killed it. He and the other driver walked away, but it was kind of a shame.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

ERASER5 I'd rather have that Volvo than the Bertone, but the Bertone is not mine and I guess I'm pretty lucky my wife likes the idea of a V8 powered DD.
Could be worse she could drive a Scion Oh crap she does drive a Scion.
My old Scion! We are both ready to get rid of the "box" even though it is a really good car. Boring compared to this (when done)When this is done and proven itself awhile we will unload the XB.

Last night I spent another couple hours monkey'n around with the 5.0.
Man, not to knock Furd but its all so foreign to me every other thing I touch
seems to be a battle.
Still have to swap oil pans, clean the engine(greasy and rusty)etc.

Maybe ? However I bought a kit which tells me what to do and I still spend a fair amount of time scratching
The Ford thing is new as well as the Volvo thing. Learning is good.
Almost ready for the engine to go in. Swapping oil pans 1st.
Had to mod the speedo cable, and still have to figure out drive gear and driven gear on the tailshaft since its a 2000 transmission and its all speed sensors on the newer stuff. Got to beat a baseball size dent in the inner fender for header clearance. I did think to myself is this how Frizzle Fry would do this ? LOL
I pulled the condensor so the angle of attack dropping in the 5.0 would be easier.
I am dog tired today but still went out in the shop and pulled the old p/u tube
off the 5.0. Had to do something.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

I gotta admit I am looking forward to driving this a couple times.
Good luck prying from my wife once its done.
The thing should scoot pretty good. here are some specs.....
V6 130 hp ....... V8 215hp
V6 153 ft lbs ....... V8 288ft lbs
ATM 3 spd......... ATM 4 spd o.d.

rear gear 3.54
about 3100 lbs.

BBK states 15-20 hp increase from the headers. I will have to test it to be sure its running well. pacificraceways.com

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Sometimes things work out sometimes they dont. Saturday I was concerned
about the oil pick up tube. I'm standing there thinking its pretty cool of Furd
to bolt up the pick up tube and as I reach for the new one I see its really
kinked so I hold off till Monday till I can find out if its normal (it is). Monday rolls around and I did not feel well.
So today I'm going to get that new pan installed and dang if I can't find the gasket. Arghhhhhh
Good news is years back I bought some Stage 8 header bolt keepers for a 396
I had and they turned out to be the wrong ones. I figured I'd hold on to them
thinking I would find a use for them. Here we are probably 10 years later and they have found a home.
So theres always tomorrow

FB I too have yet to warm up to the boxy Volvos I do like the earlier ones like our Amazon. A V8 in that would be insane. Cutlass and 49 1st !

Tonight I got the oil pan on 9.333 ft lbs. 110 " lbs. Or close.
Ford did have a nice set up on the oil pan, see pics

Also pulled out the throttle cable, I am not a big guy but I am 6' tall crawling under the dash on that car is no fun.

Modified the trans mount, sawzall/grinder !

These cars have this awesome glove leather interior, heated seats and no cup holders

Might have traction issues ?

Going to test fit the engine this weekend so I can get the driveshaft measurements.
350-400$ for a custom driveshaft sound about right ?

Also design the exhaust sytem while the engine is bolted up. Going to be tight ! Thinking single 3" system. Being a hot rodder at heart I am having a tough time deciding on muffler(s) I like the free flowing ones like Magnaflow or Hooker maxflow or Ultraflows ? Thinking it might be too loud ?
My wife deals with "clients" not like me and my "customers"
What might sound great may be a bit much?
What about adding a glass pack after the main muffler. It would not be a bad thing to put a quieter style muffler and lose some HP, she wont care but it dont feel right to me.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Funny how things go. Yesterday I ordered some 3" pipe and some mandrel bent elbows to get a start on the Bertone exhaust. Tonight my wife went to a auction/ fundraiser to benefit local youth. One of the items for auction was a custom exhaust system. She won ! Less work for me ! Get this thing on the road that much faster. And I'll have some 3" pipe and bends for my next project

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Been slow going but its going, Sunday I got to messing with the mounts, elongating holes and test fitting. Took out the original exhaust.
Ever wonder what a Volvo exhaust system looks like ? Me neither
Bought a book on Volvo V-8 conversions which is mostly about Chevy V-8's
but lots info that will help me get it on the road faster.
Just thumbing through it I can see its well worth the cost. Tonight will be cleaning tools for a bit then calling it good.
