Thanks guys! And yes, I do plan to make it street legal... Just had it certified as a street rod not too long ago- the original serial number was still on the frame in the back of the car, so that worked out good!

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Well, from the pictures it won't look like I really accomplished much this weekend, but in reality a lot got accomplished... I think Saturday was about a 10 hour day, yesterday was about 12 hours and today was only about 8- but I managed to put new rings and bearings (rod and mains) in the flathead. It probably sounds ridiculous to take that much time to some, but it was the first time I've ever done it, and did so without help.

I did a compression test a few weeks ago and found 80 PSI on all cylinders except for number 4, where I got about 15. So I pulled the heads, and dropped the pan. To say the least, the piston was UGLY... The top compression ring had broken and came through the top of the piston, before smashing into the head and became imbedded in the piston itself- amazingly leaving the valves intact. The rod bearing was also pretty worn, so I pulled the number 1 piston had found a similar story, except the top ring didn't come up through piston (although it probably would have soon).

Last week I pulled the remaining pistons and found every piston had a broken top ring. Fortunately the bores had remained pretty intact (except some scoring on number 4), so I used a deglazer to put some cross-hatching back in it. It was still standard bore, but all the ring lands in the pistons were worn for the top ring, so I switched them with a set I have from a different flathead I got recently. Also went with cast iron rings to help seat them easier since this motor probably doesn't have the straightest bores

Anyways, after a quick hone, new rings, and putting new bearings in (boy was the top rear main bearing a pain to change!) I put it back together and fired it up this afternoon. I was worried at first because it seemed REAL tight when I tried cranking it, but after I let the jumper pack fully charge, it started right up. Still getting a bit of blue smoke, probably just from all the oil I put on the rings and getting them seated, but no blow-by through the breather at all. Also, managed to relocate the dipstick from the drivers side (where I had a lot of interference from exhaust and the steering box) to the passengers side, which made things a lot better.

Sucks about the motor, but it looks cool as hell! At least it's running again!

Thanks! I did have to throw a couple pictures of my C-30 in there though Not real sure about flathead having a weak top ring (first time really working on them), but I think the motor might have been stuck at some point, and someone decided to try to start it without checking inside first. It was hard to believe it ran so good though with broken rings! The only way I really knew there was as issue was with it smoking pretty good out of the passenger side...

Ya probably could have done without that hassle, but hey at least I got to learn a lot of new things! Nice to be able to start it up again though

Don't think I have any video cameras, but maybe one of my friends does... Did the brake lines and started bleeding them this weekend, so a first real "test drive" should be in order soon!

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Just a quick update...

Here's the new master cylinder in place:

Originally it had a GM single pot master (with a screw top- believe they were only made in '63) but when I ran the casting number on it, it came back as a single or a dual. Figured to be on the safe side I might as well go with a dual. I forget what material the brake lines are made out of, but they have sort of a copper tone to them- sort of reminds me how most of the brake and fuel lines used to be copper on these old cars! Had a kit for 1/4" line and was able to use correct fittings to go right into the master cylinder without crude looking adapters- definitely helped with the space restrictions there too...

Also drilled and pop-riveted the driver's side door "flap" (no more green tape holding it down!):

And for the heck of it I went and installed my mirror:

Re: Late 60's Vintage Modified Race Car

Just a quick update...

Got the wiring about 90% done- just need to do the speedometer, windshield wiper (waiting on the windshield itself), and then I have to re-do the front turn signals (for some reason changing the old sealed beams to new ones made it so the amber light couldn't be seen from the front?!).

Anybody from NH happen to know if parking lights are required?

Yesterday I managed to take it for it's first real test drive (sshhhh don't tell the cops!)... Wasn't too far, just a 1/2 mile or so up a dirt road- BUT it was still nice to get out of 1st gear for a change! Overall went pretty good, needed to adjust the clutch (think I've got that figured out now), and do some more brake work. I've got most of the brakes figured out now (finished my parking brake tonight), but the master cylinder is still kind of bugging me.

The brakes don't seem to do much until the pedal is about 1/2 way, and I if I really push, I can push it right to the end- doesn't really seem to pump up either.... But it'll still lock up the brakes when I push in far enough- does that sound right??

(Still have to tidy up the wires!)

I love it.
It really looks tip top.
I know you were following the original numbering, but I would have painted the 210 sloping down instead of up on the passenger side.
But nonetheless still great
