Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

It's great when you find a truck that is so well done and resembles what we want for our trucks. Definitely inspiring for sure.

I hope everything goes well with your new baby entering this world, as well as your wife Kyle. You're a blessed man!

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

My awesome wife told me to go work on my truck this afternoon even though we are less than a week from the due date. It was nice to get out and get something accomplished, even though it was not a very fun job. I went at the inside of the firewall with a wire wheel to get ready for primer. I almost got the driver side complete. There are some spots that I need a smaller wire brush attachment to reach but other than that, it's pretty well there.

Two days in a row! Now I'm just feeling spoiled
I got the passenger side all stripped down as well. Next step will be filler and seam seal on dash and firewall.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

I have just noticed that my stereo box for behind my seat may need to be re-planned out a little bit. My pressboard has expanded and since the metal frame obviously isn't, it has got some pretty warped spots in it. Now I have to come up with a new substrate that will work. Might have to use sheet metal as I can't be much thicker than 1/8".

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

I managed to sneak out for an hour today and started the filler process on the top of the dash. I got the marglass done and am now ready for lightweight filler.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

I have found the time to get a bit more filler done on the dashboard over the last couple days. It is coming along nicely.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

More progress made on the dash today. I also took the GMC lettering I had cut out of the fender emblem and ground it down so it was thin and sleek. I'm still toying with the idea of using these on the dash where I removed the speaker grill. I would paint the letters the same colour as the dash so that it would be subtle. Any thoughts on this?

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

So a couple weekends ago, I made a trip out to the wrecker to get the steering column bracket that my brother stole from me. Haha guess he lost his. Anyway, I found this very nice straight upper grille moulding that I needed very badly as mine is trashed. I didn't want to play around with aftermarket parts and this piece has been very elusive up till now. I was glad to score it for $40 even though I had to take the whole mangled grille as I had no way to seperate them out there.

I also ordered a new set of defrost vents so I can make sure they fit properly in the dash. They seem to be the wrong radius in the corners but there is a pretty good chance that is just how they are. I have done some fine sanding on the passenger one to get it fitting better and am happy with the result. Might do a bit more touch ups on it and then I can repeat for the drivers side.

I think that looks sweet, Painted the same color as the dash would make it look embossed. Subtle details are fun Nice work on your truck!

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

I got the defrost vents fitting better than factory now. I had to do some sanding on the corners of them and adjusting of the flanges but they fit very nice and tight now. I also finished sanding the last of the filler on the dash and am ready for primer on that area now. I also wanted to fix a defect in the weatherstrip flange on my driver door. For some reason it got substantially wider at the front corner and I didn't want any issues went fitting the weatherstrip so I took care of that issue.

Re: My 1970 GMC “Project Splice”

I picked up these "Custom/10" fender badges after realising the "custom" font matches the flimsy little plastic badge that goes on the glove box door exactly. If I modify these badges the same way I modified the "GMC" fender badge, I can re-create the glove box emblem in metal instead of the lame plastic one. Yes it will be a bit larger but I believe it will look awesome!

Haha thanks. Good luck on yours. I'm finding it difficult to hold on to the small pieces while grinding them.
