Installing Windshield & Chrome - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

About to the point of needing to get my rear and front window put back in my truck. I have the rubber and glass and the chrome. I will get safelite or someone to put the windshield back in. My question is, does the chrome need to be put on the windshield before the windshield is put back in the truck or does it matter? Thanks.

Chrome (stainless steel, technically) gets installed into the rubber seal AFTER the seal is on the windshield but BEFORE the windshield is installed. So the glass, rubber, and trim is installed as a pre-assembled unit.

It CANNOT be added after, if that's what you were wondering.

Dont let em talk you out of the trim when they aren"t able to install the unit. Find an old timer if you arent comfortable doing it yourself.

Once you get it all on the glass let it sit for a day or two to relax then you have less chance of the chrome lifting out during installation it's really no big deal just keep an eye on the top corners of the windshield they seem to be the only spot to come out in my experience

makin sure you have the right rubber for the right trim is essential

Which rubber do I need if I have the Chrome(stainless steel) trim? I purchased the deluxe cab rubber at Truckandcarshop. The only choices were deluxe cab and standard cab. Was the deluxe correct? Thanks.

If you are using aftermarket trim it likely will not fit. OEM trim is an easy install. See my thread here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=484773

I've done the OEM trim using "Precision" rubber. I've found it's the best out there the hard way.

Could you explain what "Precision" rubber is? A brand? A business name?
I'm going to have to do this very thing to my 69 and like most of us, would like to get it right.

I believe some forum vendors have their products or you can go directly through them. BTW-their push on door seals are great also.

I had a similar problem, my 72 gmc had cracked windshield, so i bought LMC rubber and took a 70 chevy windshield to replace. Lo and behold the trim of the 70 does not fit the 72 gmc rubber, it is wider and the rubber does not have the groove for it. So i tried to put the 72 gmc trim (not in pristine condition) on but it kept popping out. Gave up finally and installed without trim, hoping to install a a later date. This was a solo install, tried the rope method as described starting from bottom to top but never could get the corners in, finally reversed the install
starting at the top towards bottom by inserting windshield in the opening top first making sure corners were snug, worked perfect.

You guys go ahead and search this out on this forum. There are many (mine is one) stories on here that will shed boo-coo light on what you are about to do. I worked at a glass house and had to bring in some heavy hitters to get it right (after 3 attempts). You have about 50% chance of getting it right without doing your homework.

There are differences between the years. 71-72 windshield trim requires 71-72 gaskets...

Use the 67-70 trim and gasket ,the 67 trim sits deeper in the gasket and makes for a much easier install with the exact same look as the later style .
