Re: HEI Plug Wires

I plan on using these msd streetfire wires on mine ,they are for a 76 vette. My truck has hei and ram horns and I want to route them through the motor mounts so I'm hoping these will work.

I put them on the pontiac I have and they were easy to install and came with the sparkplug end already done.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

I am in the middle of converting a 72 to HEI. I bought a set of wires for a 76 Corvette. I will do the conversion tomorrow and let you know how it goes. The initial look at the wires looks good.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

The wires went on easily, even through the mounts. Worked like clockwork.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

75 and up vette for HEI, 74-63 for points and coil type ignition. All years vette wires are the same length so don't get hung up on the year to much, just decide on HEI or non HEI.

The reason a few of the wires are to long is the vettes had an elaborate shielding system that swings way down low by the pan and up the backside though more chrome shielding, up and under more shielding that covers the distributer. It takes some extra inches to go though all that shielding. If a few are to long for your application just shorten then up a little. If you have a few that are two short they are in the wrong position. A few dollars for the ends, about 45 seconds a wire and your done. Once you do a few you will probably buy only cut to fit sets in the future. The last three or for I have done are from MSD bulk wire, ends, and boots.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

The longest two wires could've been a few inches shorter, but I will shorten them later.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

To assist others down the road, I figured I would add to this older post. I just replaced my incorrect over the valve cover spark plug wires with correct under the exhaust manifold wires on my 70 350 4x4 with HEI.

I used ACDelco spark plug wire set 9088S. Black, 8mm, 90 degree boots. I measured the lengths and ran them to the following cylinder plugs - 1: 48”, 2: 56”, 3: 56” 4: 44”, 5: 29” 6: 29”, 7: 22”, 8: 27”.

Note 1: I ran plug wires 1\3 through the driver side engine mount and 2\4 through the passenger side engine mount. I couldn't find any drawings that show this, but I have seen some other forum guys do it and with the above lengths I needed to. A little grease and the boots slipped through easier than I thought they would.

Note 2: 1\3 and 2\4 use the duel wire retainer by the heat shield but 5\7 and 6\8 do not.....see drawings. With these lengths 5\7 could use a duel wire retainer by the heat shield but 6\8 couldn't........I do have them installed there thinking 4x duel retainers were used, but it looks like only 2 were correct.

Note 3: 1\3 and 2\4 also use the duel wire clips that mount to oil pan bolts on each side....hard to determine from drawings, but I have seen other guys use them and I think they help.

Note 4: Based on my install, wires 2\4 are a couple inches longer than needed, but I was able to get a good setup adjusting at the retainers.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

Installed my plug wires (for 76 Vette, NAPA Belden Premium 8mm) and plugs Delco R45TS gapped at .045, per this thread... Especially from Sapper, LeeH and JimH. MUCH THANKS!!!! My big girl is purring like a kitten. You prevented a lot of frustration with auto parts store employees that are either not knowledgeable or helpful about our trucks. #c10life

Re: HEI Plug Wires

Suppose I have ACDelco spark plug wire set 9088S or similar that has the rubber buttons on top of the distributor ends of the wires.

And a typical distributor cap such as ACDelco D336X.

Is there a different distributor cap or a coil cover that engages with those rubber buttons on the wires? Can anybody tell what a GM or ACDelco part number is? What is the correct part of the distributor for that type of wire?

There is a clamping ring that engages the cap and the nubs on the boots. You don't need it. I run mine without it. Here's a link to a sample.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but, I see that GMC Pauls sells the wire loom support brackets needed to route the wires like this, but does anyone know where to find the bolts for the wire loom supports? Or what thread they would be? I'm trying to do this on a greasy old truck with not a lot of wiggle room, figuring out what bolts are needed sounds like a PIA...?

Re: HEI Plug Wires

I don’t remember the size off hand, someone else may know. But I just rebuilt mine and I bought the holders from lmc and they had the bolts and washer as well. Part number 30-0780. They’re only 45˘ but shipping would be stupid. But may be worth calling them and asking the size, then get from your local hardware store.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

yup. They worked pretty good. There’s one or two that could be a hair longer, and a couple a hair shorter. When the time comes to change I’m gonna go with the make your own just so I can get them just perfect. But they do work, even with shorty headers.

Re: HEI Plug Wires

I know it's an old post, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the detailed documentation in this that included the wire lengths, locations, and part numbers. It helps a lot. Thanks, JimH!
