Do component speakers need a box?

I was wondering if my 5" component speakers needed a box? Can you run them without one? I was thinking of fiberglassing them in the kickpanels but I will have them in the wood from for a while until I can fiberglass them, like for a few months. Would it hurt my speakers or make them sound really horrible without a box?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Do component speakers need a box?

No they do not. They might sound a bit better though is they are sealed in some sort of enclosure, but you have to get the air space and tuning right.
