88-up speedo

Are they all electric speedos, working on a swap in my 93 and would need a cable driven speedo.
Does the engine computer control the speedo ?

Thanks

Re: 88-up speedo

After 88 they are electric speed-o-meter. I’m pretty sure it goes thru the ECM. I had an 89 that I SAS’s with no speedo, CEL for no VSS or speed signal something or other.

Re: 88-up speedo

93 should have a VSS buffer box thats separate from the ECM, it receives the signal first from the sensor on the transmission and then sends the conditioned signal to the speedometer, ecu, etc.

Great info, Thanks
I think I should stick with leaving it TBI and the 4L60e, I just want something to cruise around with.

Yes!
Good accurate information.
The VSS buffer is also known as the DRAC

Re: 88-up speedo

VSSB and DRAC are two different things, as shown in the link. Modified DRAC on the left, unmodified VSSB on the right.

Re: 88-up speedo

The cluster plug changes in '92, so for your '93 the range you'll be looking for is '92-'94, unless you want to cut into the dash and repin the connector to the earlier style.
