Re: Attention you get on the road

I lived on the island . People were bad even then I left in 81 don’t regret it for a second . Been back a handful of times . Thankfully I have no family out there anymore. They either moved up around me or to PA . People here wave even when driving my regular cars and I don’t know them but wave back

You detail instances where you’ve had great interactions with those showing interest who are acting in a good way but make no distinction for those acting badly.

Well I’m from New York. If you are driving badly (especially at 70+mph) we will flip you off regardless of whether we think you are interested in our car or not. We are also suspect of anyone who randomly walks up to us but if you are nice we are nice. If you are rude, we will be rude or somehow let you know that you are being rude. How can a person correct bad behavior if they are never told it’s bad?

When I started this thread I had been thinking of the subject all day and needed to vent, probably could’ve wrote some parts differently. I do own for the cars for me, don’t care what others think about them and drive them to unwind so would rather be left alone most days. But I don’t act rude for no reason, have had plenty of conversations and ended them nicely if I wanted to leave. I run radio control models, plenty of people come up to me seems like no matter where I am. I never hand them the controller but I’m nice about it, they usually don’t ask and understand when I refuse and have talked at length plenty of times. Even at work I get lots of random people coming up to me. I don’t know what it is about a man walking through a building with fire extinguishers that makes people want to come up to them but believe it or not it does.

It’s different with the Camaro though. Just yesterday I took it to work and a deli on the way home. The deli owner always asks about the car, likes seeing it and it sparked a conversation about a local cruise night with a customer. All great, until another customer walked in and yelled “who’s got the Camaro out there?” I can see the car, nobody hit it, it’s not on fire, no puddles, nothing wrong. The deli owner asked “something wrong with it?” and he replied “No, I just want to buy it” proving he’s a jerk who doesn’t care about interrupting everyone to get his way. So I told told him it’s not for sale, he tried asking about the car and give me his number and told him I wouldn’t interact with him because of how he acted when he came in. He then apologized, I think only to get me to take his number, I accepted the apology but still refused the number and talking with him. He kept trying, finally left only to start walking towards my car, he was going to put his number on it if I didn’t come outside and yell at him to get the F away from it. Never placed an order or bought anything, came in and acted like a jerk just for the car.
I've been diplomatic in disagreeing with you. Your decision to try to make it personal says everything that needs to be said about the perspective you take on interacting with people. My recommendation to you is to drive your Camaro less. That way you don't have to put up with these encounters and you don't negatively influence others' perspective on those of us who have the opportunity to own cars that they like.

BTW, the car looks really good, and I like the truck too. Sorry, haha, I know you don't like people wasting your time with compliments but I really do like them...

Re: Attention you get on the road

I got other things I got to do, but I had to pop back on and say how much I ultimately enjoyed your assessment of my socio-political perspective, based solely on the city I live in. Oh, yeah and the fact that I like happy people. I'm not a fan of redundancy, but I will say again that enjoying shared interests is one of my favorite things about owning cars, and being human. BTW, I have heard that people from your area tend to express themselves aggressively, have you ever considered that that is playing into how people show interest in your vehicles?

So you can tell me the impression I gave but I can’t tell you the same?
You disagree, fair enough.
Oh so according to you I’m a bad person for not responding to bad actors how you want me to. Because I keep saying bad actors and you ignore it focusing instead on the one person I flipped off while I’ve said nothing about the reactions I gave to other bad actors.

This just shows how little you’ve been paying attention. I tried to clarify in other posts that I was venting about bad interactions, but you insist that I’m just a big meanie to everyone. Below is my quoted post where right from the start I tried to diplomatically end our exchange. Maybe it’ll work this time. Oh and thanks for the compliment.

I appreciate everyone’s post in this thread, whether you agreed or not, had bad interactions too or everything is just peachy keen. The bad interactions I posted are just the highlights from that category and the fact they were weighing on my mind was the reason for starting the thread. I thought we’d vent and share our bad interactions stories. I expected the “comes with the territory” type of responses, I didn’t expect it to turn into a discussion about preferences in interactions, example whether or not you like people approaching at a gas station.

My dad is a gear head, so I was born and raised a gear head and he had cars from when I was about 12 on up. Maybe it’s rose colored glasses but I don’t remember anything like what I’ve experienced happening back then. Hopefully this year will be different for me and I’ll have more fond memories than memories of bad interactions.

Re: Attention you get on the road

My wife had a bit of an altercation yesterday. She had an appointment with our tax guy.

His office is right next door to The Salvation Army. And they were having a food bank at the time. Giving out food. There was a line of people out front.

So she pulls up in the yellow Corvette and immediately starts getting dirty looks.

One woman yells at her that she has no business being there.

Now my wife doesn't take any cr@p off anyone. She told the woman that she was getting her taxes done so she could get a big fat refund. Then pointed at the tax office.

Then the woman said that she didn't need any food either. Dumb thing to say.

So my wife told her to get out of the line and leave the food to those who need it.

Now the other woman was the one getting the dirty looks. She didn't say another word.

Amen to that, I’ve only been married once and she’s the best I could ever ask for, that said she’s 4.5 months pregnant with kid number 3; I don’t talk back much these days, sometimes I think she’d kick my butt if I pushed her buttons too hard right now haha.

If she's pregnant you can bet your azz she would. I remember those days. Just shut up and get out of her way.
I had to learn that the hard way.

Re: Attention you get on the road

On Saturday I hauled some old 19.5 tires into the tire shop for disposal with my '74. The shop owner was all over the truck, peeking in the fenders and asking all sorts of questions. I was happy to talk with him- usually I find those guys are more down to earth anyway and can appreciate the older trucks.
I'm a member of our local car club and taken it to a couple shows downtown. As a new guy to the club and to town no one really knows me that well but I'd say only one club member really showed interest in the truck, even with the club president as my next door neighbor. I'm one of the youngest guys in the club too, club participation is pretty low for anyone 40 and younger. I've made the effort to make it known I'm working on my Napco pickup and asked what other members are up to but no one seems interested or even responds. If it was a muscle car or car in general there would be more interest.

Car clubs are like that I used to belong to a Chevy car club but it comprised of mostly Chevelles. If I go to a show with anything other than the chevelle I feel like an outcast no one goes out of their way to say hi . Or I get where's the chevelle question . If I take one of the Studebakers I'm a leper and have to park near the imports cars . So needless to say I dont belong to or participate in clubs .

I'm a fool for collecting things but ex-wives is not one of them. One and done for me. Ex-girlfriends are bad enough. I have no shortage of those, and I'm willing to keep collecting till I can't collect no more!

If I take one of the Studebakers I'm a leper and have to park near the imports cars . So needless to say I dont belong to or participate in clubs .
They actually have a car plaque for you.

They make a three piece rocker with the same image . Good way to cause a problem with the local 1%ers. Not that car clubs are like that. Now there is an organization called the skulls car club , they have no dues meetings or sponsored car shows . Just a group of guys that get together at shows

Re: Attention you get on the road

I still have my "Worthless Cruisers" t-shirts I bought from SEE TEN years ago. Not a club, but a bunch of his buddies who are into >building & driving< cool old stuff who got tired of people telling them what they thought their cars & trucks are worth. They just love their stuff so they call them worthless. My feelings about clubs equates to about the same. If that's your thing, fine. Not for me is all. I'm fine with being a lone wolf. A lone wolf can get together with whoever he wants and go wherever he wants whenever he wants. I've never owned a vehicle I couldn't operate all by myself

Re: Attention you get on the road

I had my truck at a little show many years ago. I came back to my truck after a walk-around and found these two guys chatting with each other near my truck. One was leaning on my hood. Once the one guy realized that this was my truck and his breach in etiquette, he jumped away and was very apologetic. I quipped that he might get some rust on his clothes.

It was no big deal but slightly more than annoying.
