special-K, They came off of a 1972. What is the difference between 1st and 2nd design?

Re: Dana 44 "big hub" hub assembly/spindles

I can't exactly explain, but the GM parts book lists them as 1st and 2nd design and the number stamped in the axle is what you go by.I had to replace one on my '72 when a lock-out went way south on me.Years ago, when these were available,I replaced one on a '71 because the threads were a bit damaged.I still hung onto the old one and fortunately my '72 was 1st design. You can't find a thread file or die for the oddball pitch GM used, but I managed to dress them with jeweler files and am now running it.I imagine the difference is in the bearing surfaces/dimensions.If I had one off to compare I could help.Maybe another member could help.

Re: Dana 44 "big hub" hub assembly/spindles

Did you sell the axle stubs to Sharpie72?Maybe he can help ID them by matching them up.These are rare and not available new.if money was no object I'd scoop them up and figure it out later.

There were two different bearings available. See pic... Yours appear to be large bearing.

Re: Dana 44 "big hub" hub assembly/spindles

Early and late design have the same bearings, the difference is the early (71-Early72) has a conventional lip seal pressed in it which rides on the spindle. The late late design (late 72-76) uses the bellow type seal that fits over the axle stub and seals against the spindle. Should for any reason these are wrong for sharpie1972, I would like a stab at them regardless of style.

Yea, I realized that. I was just reaching out there just in case they didn't work for him and if he was watching the thread. I have many sets of the hubs myself but thank you. Your price on the hubs are killer deal for someone!
Good luck with your sale.
