Computer Folks

Hi All , I need some qualified opinions on browsers. I have internet
explorer currently. But it has some issues with windows 10.
I am not a computer guy but some of you are.
I need easy to work with, easy to install, and hopefully one that
doesn't "strip mine " every thing I do on line.
THANKS! It is good to be in touch with folks that have your back.
That is one of the many things about this Forum.
All The Best, Dirk

Re: Computer Folks

I have 10 and I tried to stick with explorer but so many sites aren’t supporting it anymore I had to quit using it. I don’t use windows edge at all. I love the bing search engine but I hate it gives me a zillion things on its home page I dont want tossed at me. You can change the settings to just have a search bar without all The who-ha but it refuses to stay defaulted there.

So to the point (finally) I use Firefox with the default search engine set at duck duck go.
I usually get good results with it

Re: Computer Folks

I'm not good with computers so I signed up with Best Buy's Geek Squad service a few years ago. Anything goes wrong, they fix it, and it's been worth the annual fee for that reason.

I've been running Firefox on Windows 10. Several months ago there was an issue (can't recall what it was). I contacted the Geek Squad and after they de-bugged my computer, I asked about Chrome. They said it ran faster than Firefox and had fewer problems.

I had them install Chrome and have been using it ever since. Mrs Stocker wanted to continue using Firefox, so we kept it and she still uses it.

Re: Computer Folks

I try very hard not to use Google/Chrome/Facebook etc ... I don't even use Android phones.

Its almost impossible though to "hide". And even when you have zero to hide its still creepy how they work.

Re: Computer Folks

Here are my reasons for using Firefox as my primary browser:
1. It's lightweight. It doesn't hog resources like most others.
2. It's secure. The team stays on top of updates.
3. It's compatible with a host of privacy add-ons.
4. It's stable. I rarely have problems with it loading multiple pages.
5. It doesn't spy on me.
6. Its enhanced privacy protection keeps websites from spying on me.

If you want an extra layer of security, ditch Google as your search engine and use duckduckgo.com.

Oh, and I'm a former Army network administrator, so network and browser security are a big deal to me.

Re: Computer Folks

Another vote for Firefox. If you want a slower rate of 'feature' updates, get the Extended Support Release. You still get security updates on the normal schedule but things like a 'New and Improved UI' will arrive after folks on the normal release schedule have received and tested them.

You can also specify to use encrypted DNS so your ISP has more trouble tracking what you are searching for. Tools/Options/General/Network Settings/(Check the box labeled "Enable DNS over HTTPS"

Re: Computer Folks

Hey everyone,
I ended up going with Foxfire ESR, DuckDuckgo, and DNS over HTTPS.
Seems to work great thanks to you all!
This is way outside my comfort zone so I really appreciate the qualified Help !!!
All The Best,
Dirk
