A quick flip while my Burb is down

I'm loving that 55 wagon. It makes me want to get one for my daily driver.

Its going to be a couple weeks before the Apache leaves and the new owner is having me do a couple things. Tear the old bed out and install a plywood one, line x'ing the wood only and detail the engine ,but leave the inner fenderwells, radiator, firewall etc. Here's some pics of todays work.

Headed back tommorrow to pull the valve cover, resand it, spray it and install a new cover gasket.

Removed the plywood bed floor, had it LineX'ed and reinstalled it. Looks good for the money spent vs restoring it to new with a bed kit. For a driver, this is a great way to go.

I resprayed the manifold with high temp exhaust coating, bead blasted the valve cover and resprayed it red again too. I spent last night hog ringing the covers on. I used burlap and cotton batting for the back. Burlap and 2 inch medium foam for the base. It looks killer and feels like a new seat! No bouncing while driving, just smooth cruising. I am going to tear down my Suburban seats and use the same reciepe on them.

I almost did an axle flip, or drop axle install but had found a motor for my 50 Suburban half way through this build that I HAD to have. The truck actually sold 2 weeks ago, but the new owner and I agreed to have me finish a few things before delivering it to him on my way to pick up the new Burb motor.
I hope he lowers it too!

You did a nice job. Could you take some pictures of the process when you do the burb seats? Your explaination in the other thread was great and I could visualize the process but some pics would help instill some confidence before I try it.

Installed the headliner at lunch, its a pretty basic install. I marked the center of the cab opening at the front panel and rear panel with a pencil. Marked the center of the headliner at the front and the back with a white paint pen at the edge to line up with my cab marks. Shot the cab area and the back of the headliner with " Wolf Grip" industrial strength heat resistant contact cement and let set up for a couple minutes. Leave a 3-4 inch area around the edge of the headliner and roof for some wiggle room when pushing the liner up between the panels. I raised the headliner front to back in the center and let the right /left sides fall. Lined up my marks from both the cab and the liner as you lay upside down on the seat looking up and then pushed the liner towards the right and left sides of the truck. The liner might be cut long and wide, this is where you are glad you didnt spray glue all the way to the edge. Take some scissors and trim the edge leaving only 2 inches to tuck. I used a plastic windshield bone-looks like a plastic crow bar and gently tucked the liner all the way around. Grab some metal edge trim from your local hardware store, upholstery supplier or nut and bolt supplier and trim the raw edge. pics suck with the cell phone, Ill get a better one, but you get the idea.

This is a thread started last December 1st and I sold this 58 Apache truck to fund a full tilt, built 250 inline for the 50 Burb. I recently bought a 65 Short wide and am re-doing it for the wife to drive. I still get PM's where the seat cover came from. I finally remembered and wanted to post the info here.

It turned out nice. I only had it 29 days and delivered it to a California guy on the 30th day I owned it. He was the " buy it now" bidder on Ebay. He had it about 6 months, redid a few more things and sold it on Ebay again for $500 more than he bought it from me. I took the cash and picked up a reeeeaaaly expensive inline 250 that had everything thrown at it and installed it in the Burb. Best motor I have had in a long time, I love the thing.

Nice truck, and you did great work on it. That being said, I don't get why you were so rough on it with the CLR and pads? I'm a big patina fan, but what you did looks like picking at scabs before they healed. Why not just wash it, and then use some Zymol cleaner wax to remove contaminants, oxidation, etc. And feed the paint with the nourishing oils and leave a shine? I just would hate to see other folks potentially ruin a nice factory original patina by following these harsh CLR suggestions

Patina is the word we use because think we're connoisseurs but it's just rusty neglect, how can you "ruin" it? We're getting a little ***sniff sniff*** attitudy about it, aren't we?

Besides, Fish spent the money and he did the work so he can do it any way he wants. I think it looked waay better after he did it than before.

Fish, I never saw the metal edge trim photos and now they're gone. Any chance of re-posting? Is this the stuff you find at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc for trimming the edge of car doors?

Oh, absolutely you can ruin it. You can rub through and remove what little factory paint and shine there may have been.

This isn't a matter of being snobby, so knock it off. Other guys could see this thread and end up being too rough with their factory paint. Before anybody tries this method that they can't undo, I'm simply pointing out that perhaps a more gentle first round with cleaner wax may be a good idea. It also serves to help protect the finish and stop further rust, if repeated several times a year.

Pics on the interwebs can be very decieving.

The original paint ( turquoise) was burried under flat nasty Forrest green house paint applied by a 3 year old and a worn brush at best. I was merely taking the " scabs" of crap green and rust to reveal areas of og paint, giving it that " hey, look what I found" look to it. Review the engine bay shots and look at the firewall. I preserved the paint there, even leaving the og inner liners and not respraying them.

No disrespect taken, but each persons truck is there own canvas to create from.

Hey Dan,
are you refering to the headliner sharp edge after the pleated pad installed? I used a rubber coated u shaped edge gaurd kind of like what holds GM body weatherstrips around door openings, but without the weatherstrip cushion. Can be found at interior supply and some hardware stores. Cut by the foot with a pair of side cutters to get through the metal skeleton.
