Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Ok guysi need advice....
My original goal was to spruce this truck up and drive it!
But the deeper I get into, the more I suffer from "while Im at it" syndrom!
I am tempted to just tear it all the way down and make this a true restoration...

But then it will be down a long time... Lots more cash.. And I may not want to drive it if I make it too perfect....

Dang... So stick with plan... Or go all out??

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Just paint and clean as you go. If you break it down into smaller projects, you can drive it in between and have less chance of it turning into a garage ornament.

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

That's what I struggle with sometimes. I usually just hit the areas that obviously need help. I don't have the room to do a full frame off, but even if I did, I probably wouldn't. I like being able to drive it in the rain without thinking about where all the water and dirt is going and how long it's gonna take to clean. Good job!

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Thanks Guys... yeah, I think I will stick to the plan...
Get it spruced up, drop in the new engine, paint the thing, and drive the wheels off of it...
I plan on keeping it forever, so maybe a whole frame-off down the road some time...

That's about where I am at, too. Although laying under it putting in cab mounts, I was thinking about how close I was to pulling the cab off and ......

I bolted it back together so I can drive it. It's been off the road for over a month, I really miss my truck!

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

My band had two gigs this weekend, so no shop time...
But I DID score a used 600cfm Holley for $75 and a new in box Edelbrock Performer intake $86 on eBay....

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Found this pic online.....
GREAT INSPIRATION!!

Other than the mirrors (I will stick with the small rectangles) and the wheels/tires (I want either "stock" or "period" centerlines) I really like the look of this one....

Went and saw my parents today and my dad found two pics of the truck from the day he brought it home!

I love everything but the whitewalls!

I may be in the minority but I like the whitewalls. Did it have at one time those keyhold stickers so when you went to open it, the key wouldn't scratch the paint?

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Thanks for the recent comments guys! I really took some time off the project to see Texas on my Harley over the long hot summer!
I have been collecting parts though... And as its starts getting colder I will be back in the shop with more updates!!

WHERE ARE YOU AT!! LOL I've been waiting to see your truck driving around here! Speaking of Harleys, did you happen to go to the ROT last year? My step-dad and mom went down last year.

Re: Dad's old '80 SWB...

Thread resurrection....

LIFE HAPPENED...

I haven't touched the truck in YEARS...
Had to move down to Burleson and no longer have a airplane hanger to work in...
just a 2 car garage.
Bolted the truck together to move it, but now its just SITTING!!!!
If it wasn't for the fact that it used to be my dads I would have sold it off... glad I didn't!

Money has been tight... but I have the BUG to start working again...
Just going to have to be more of a budget build!
