Door glass not sealing

I put all new glass and felt in my doors and my windows are lacking about 1/8 to a 1/4 of an inch from sealing at the top. I already checked to see if the window frame was hitting the fuzzies/anti rattle seals and it is clearing just fine. Any suggestions?

Re: Door glass not sealing

I got my new glass to and it is quite a bit thinner than the original glass. I have not installed any of it yet. I'm going to follow this thread

There is a metal tab right where the vent windows attach ( holds both halves of the door together) these tabs often break or rust through allowing the door to separate in this area that's why only '72 trucks have the dimple/screw to hold these areas together. Here's a picture. I tried to find a picture showing the tab but haven't found one just yet. This is probably the issue your having.

Yes, the glass should fit tight at the top.

This could be a real possibility. What does the gap look like around the outside of the door to body? I am fighting this on my '72 Dually right now....

LocDoc, reform the frame of the door to match the cab using a 3 foot 4x4 as a hammer. It moves around quite easily. Use a small 2x spacer so when you hit the frame you are wood on wood to the non lip part of the frame.

There is plenty of depth in the glass channel for it to seal the glass after reshaping.

Wonder how hard it would be to add the screw on non-72 doors?

Rob, You would have to weld a tab to the inside of the outside door skin for the screw to tap into.

When I put new door channels in my last build, the windows were pretty hard to roll up that last quarter of an inch. I ended up putting a little lithium grease on in the channels.

Thanks Doc. Would you happen to have a picture of the tab?

Re: Door glass not sealing

I used the original regulators. I measured both the old and new glass and they measure the same. Is it common for the glass channel to come above the anti rattle felt?

I know I took one and posted it at one time but I can't find it on here and I can't find it on my computer. I will take another tomorrow if I still have a stripped '72 door out there.

Are your window regulators new too? There is no reason that the windows shouldn't roll up higher than the top of the door if nothing is hitting or binding. Are you sure that the replacement glass isn't shorter than the originals?

Re: Door glass not sealing

FWIW... I had replacement glass for my doors that was reproduction and when I layed it over my original glass, the repop glass was about 1/8 to 1/4" smaller at the top rear quarter. I ended up searching out OEM new old stock to solve that problem.

Re: Door glass not sealing

Used glass should be easy to find, post want to buy in the parts section. The glass may not be going all the way up due to the run channel on the top back and inside the door. There is a small angle transition on the back inside door run channel and sometimes its not all the way pushed into the channel, this is just below the window opening inside the door at the rear.

I wish I could remember, but I can't. I tossed them and was able to get the OEM from Wes.

Son of a... my plans were to replace all my glass with factory "green tint" glass. How hard is it to cut a flat piece of glass to match another? Sheesh.

Re: Door glass not sealing

I called a local glass place and they said they could cut it out of laminated glass if i had a template. The glass i had trouble with came from LMC but i went ahead and ordered oer brand glass today. Ill let you know if it fits better.

Re: Door glass not sealing

Can you take a pic of what you're referring to.

The channel at the top of the door is pretty "deep" Are you saying when the window is up there's an actual open gap between the glass and seal?

Yes. Its going up in there but not compressing against the seal.
